Transfercase? No need to take the axles out to get the transfercase out. You need to loosen the downpipe so that it will swing out of the way, and then it's just the 5 17mm bolts that hold it to the tranny. Pry it off the tranny and slide the yoke out of the back. Careful, the transfercase is pretty heavy. I've dropped a couple on my fingers. biggthumpup.gif

To pull the tranny, you can take out the 2 bolts on the bottom of the front struts and swing the assembly up to pop the axles out of the tranny.

Last time we did it my buddy almost got a black eye from trying to yank it off. Lucky for him it missed his eye and landed square on his cheekbone. Just be careful and this won't happen to you. If you really want to take the axles out, I don't really remember the one that goes around the spindle nut.... we actually use a standard socket that's close enough it doesn't round off the corners of the nut and does the job because we don't have any metric that size either. All I can say is that it's one big mother.. OH, and be sure to pop the axles back in properly when you're done. There should be no shaft/space in between the transmission casing and that little green triangle block on the end meets up to the transmission.

Spindle nuts are either 32 or 34 mm (can't remember which off the top of my head) and torqued to 100 ft. lbs. Like Rob said though its not necessary to remove them from the hub to pull the axles out from the transmission.

This is just off the top of my head but I believe, flywheel bolts are torqued to 100 ft. lbs. and the PP bolts are torqued to 14 ft. lbs.

DSM transfercases aren't nearly as large as Jeep tc's. I'd say ours weigh about 20-25 pounds.

Don't bust off the 02 housing bolts that mate it to the downpipe! If you're using a stock one usually they are rusted on and we always have to use a torch to heat them up and get them off.

well, everything is unbolted. had to go to work and needed an extra set of hands to drop the tranny. only took 3 hrs. not bad for using hand tools and only the first time doing it alone.

I'm not sure that I fully understand what you're trying to do here. What is it you're trying to accomplish tonight? Maybe putting that new clutch in?
