So KOU and I decided a couple months back to install AWD halfshafts in my 90 FWD...they fit perfectly and all, except spun freely inside the sleeve when I got on it.
Turns out that the 90fwd halfshafts are like 2mm bigger in cicumfrence, yet have the same number of splines. This is a warning to the rest of you guys out there, for future reference. The halfshaft will fit, but not sit flush and spin freely when you put a little torque to them. Anyways, so we put 90FWD halfshafts in. It worked fine. Well it is my belief that when the AWD halfshafts were spinning freely they ground down the sleeve. The correct halfshafts now break loose under very hard, highspeed turning. Which means no autoX for me, and also no drag day at Cordova (I doubt they'll stay put with slicks). So to make a long story short, I need to have my trans re-sleeved on one side. I would like to have the 91+ sleeves put in so I can run AWD halfshafts. Marcus, any idea how much SloPony would charge for this? -Nick |

I don't think there are any 'sleeves' in there, just get the whole differential from a 91+ FWD and have SloPny drop it in there. It shouldn't be very expensive at all. You'll have to double check that its a drop-in replacement though.

You'll need the spider gears that engage the axles.
The part number is MD722129 for the FWD -------------------- |

We would charge the standard transmission rate of $150 plus parts if you pulled it and brought the unit to us. If your splines really are shot then a used front differential would cost around $75 that would fit your AWD axles.
I'm honestly wondering if this is your true problem though. I would think that if the splines on the diff. are stripped enough to let the axle slip under heavy load there would be nothing left and it would spin freely all the time. You best bet would be to pull at least one axle and inspect the splines on both the axle and inside the transmission before you do anything. -------------------- In Loving memory of David T Crebo

I'm curious about that front dif as well. Remember you said you were getting a 'clicking' noise that you thought was coming from the axles before we swapped them out? I'm wondering if that was more tranny related than axle related.
I might have a spare front dif from an AWD around here as well if you need one. Let me nose around to check. -Travis -------------------- |

Cool, thanks.
But after looking at that halfshaft, you have to agree that it was shot lol. |
