Last Frisday night I finally got my Talon all back together with a good used 2.0 4G63 engine. The assembly included the BR500 I purchased last year to put on the stroker engine as well as the Stage II cylinder head purchased from Zach. Otherwise she is pretty much stock save for the fuel control.
Upon start-up with some make shift IC piping I noticed a bit of smoke from the exhaust. This is fairly typical for a fresh start-up as oils and cleaners left on the parts burn off or bake in. So I was pretty happy with my progress. Saturday I came back to finish up the IC piping and some misc. loose ends. Then it would be off to some tuning! As the day progressed I found the smoke from my exhaust growing larger and larger. I tracked down a few more problems, but to no avail. By the wee hours of Sunday morning (Race day) I now had a full fledged insecticide/ 007 smoke show belowing Talon. I mean the smoke plumes would stretch out 300ft behind the car in a diameter of 20 ft. It was amazing and yet sad all at the same time. I could tell be the tuning I was trying to do along with some basic diagnostics that that engine was in good shape. So I made the assumption that an oil seal had blown out on the exhaust side of my turbo. I would pull it off for repairs after laying down a few all out smoke show passes at cordova I thought. When the race got called due to rain I decided to pull the turbo Wenesday night. Well, I did and I have to say I was a bit suprized at the carnage! I was correct thinking that an oil seal was bad...but the compressor wheel had also been chewed up as well! The most astonishing thing was the center section seemed to be so loose that I could possibly shake the wheels out of the turbo by hand!! I'm not sure what has caused the problem... Could have been partially due to the overheating my stroker motr first encountered with the blown head gasket, or some oil contamination from the rod bearings going soon after the head gasket was repaired. For all I know it could have been from sitting on a shelf for the past few months awaiting a new host engine, or the cleaning I gave it prior to reinstallation. Regardless, this turbo will be going back to PTE via Buscher Racing today for a rebuild quote. I'm hoping to have her back for the SCDC, but if not plan b is in place. Spy came by and help me get my 14b back on the Talon last night. Though the stumbling blocks were numerous, his encoragement wouldn't let me give up. So the Talon is back on the road again finally!!! For reference check out the BR500 pics:

Ouch! Sorry to hear that buddy. Bet you're not so surprised about this stuff anymore though. I know I'm not when this kind of shit happens to me. I expect it. Murphy and DSM's go hand in hand.

That really sucks Marcus! I hope you have it back before the 13th! That transfer case worked out perfectly! I had it installed by 12:30 and went straight to work after cleaning up a bit. Thanks again and good luck!
