I'm looking into picking one up. What I wanted to do was get your guy's input on size, hp, brand, and do you think its worth it

Assuming you're using it for automotive work, get the largest tank you can afford. 25-30 gal minimum (usually around 5hp+). Only way to run an impact wrench or die grinder for any length of time. Also helps to have one that has a higher tank pressure (150psi+). This also helps run high demand tools longer. You get what you pay for... personally I'd stay away from cambell-hausfeld, or the generic brands at menards or Harbor Freight. Craftsman I've got seems to be holding up pretty good.
Also, when you go to buy air tools (if you haven't already), spend some $$ and get the good stuff. My Cambell-Hausfeld $20 impact wrench will barely take the lug nuts off a car, let alone break rusty bolts loose.  Sounds like someone is starting to get serious!!

cool. yea thats what I have figured. just like hand tools.
serious? me? lol. I've had enough time to think and I am building a serious project car this winter. In the short time I've been with the talon I have missed it sorely. |

My Craftsman has had no problems in 7 years, but man is it loud! It's a 5 hp, 30 gal.

I have a cambell-hausfeld, 30 gal 5hp, and it seems to get the job done.... i have had it for close to a year.... I got a Central Pneumatic "thunder gun" and it does real well (600+ lbs/ft torque)

for as often as in which you work on your car go larger than 30 gallons. you'll appreciate it later on. other than that, Rob is right on.

Don't read the HP ratings...they are BS. Go by the cfm and psi ratings. There is a class action lawsuit going against manufacturers of air compressor who overrate their power. I have a 110V Craftsman rated at 5HP. You can do the math and figure out it only draws ~3HP peak of electrical power, so their is no way the motor./compressor is 5HP. They are usually closer to ~2.5HP max for a 110V unit.
If you can afford a 220V model, go for it. The higher cfm/psi/gallon unit you can afford, the happier you will be long term. Marty |
