Replacing a Broken Wheel Stud Options

Snapped a rear wheel stud off today. Twisted right off, barely even put some torgue on it! How much pain am I going to go through putting a new one in? Can it be replaced on the car?

They are press fit in. Take the wheel off, get a big hammer, pound on the end of the stud with the threads on it as if you're trying to hammer it through the hub. Because, essentially that's what you're going to do. The studs are press fit into the hub from the back side. To put the new one in, either get a whole lot of washers, a socket, or I think you can even put the wheel back on. Anyway, you need some kind of spacer for that hole, put the stud through the hole, and tighten down the lug nut until it's flush with the back or I would recommend about 110 ft/lbs. Make sure it comes through the hole straight however you do it though.

I replaced one on the car a couple of years back. I have rear drums but it was not that bad. Getting the stud out is easy enough, just smack it out of there. Getting the new stud in there is a little difficult as you have to make sure that it goes in straight. I put the stud through from the back. Then I put a box end wrench over the stud from the other side as a spacer and then used an old lugnut to pull it through. <--- I think that makes sense... Definately use lugnuts or bolts for this process that you don't care about because I trashed two of them.

Thanks guys, I figured it would be relatively easy, after I thought about it. I was just PO'ed when it happened I couldn't think straight!

I have had to change several of them on mine... I used the same techniques to fix it that these guys did.... ALSO, I would recomend, while you are in there, to change them all (they are only 1 dollar each at advance auto.) and it is even more of a whore when the knarled end strips while the wheel is still on....

my theory is, parts that wear together are replaced together, and it works well for me. my .02

BTW.... the advance on veterans is a hub store, they carry more parts on hand that the standard store

yeah autozone has them that is where i got mine. i have a ton of them in my toolbox beacuse my room mate put in longer wheel studs on his stealth. if you want one you can have one. i am in bloomington let me know.

Thanks for the offer, I'll just pick one up. It would cost me more in gas to drive to Bloomington from Yates City or stamps to mail it.
