its pretty much impossible to stick to totally technical unless its heavily moderated.
but who wants to come to a site that is nothing but tech? it kinda takes the fun out of it. why be part of a community if you cant act like it is a community. making it nothing but tech makes it a cold lifeless place.

I don't want a board that pushes anyone away. We welcome everyone here, membership is not restricted, regardless of your viewpoints, vehicle ownership, or pretty much anything else.

What I would like to see is a board that benefits the majority of the members in the best way possible. I think the best way to consistently provide a mutual benefit to all members is through content, assistance, and serving as a resource to members in time of need, whether that need be technical assistance, parts (e.g. DSMC Exchange), or a host of other things that are directly DSM related.

What I don't think is a benefit to anyone other than those with time on their hands are pages upon pages of chatter best kept to pm's or IM conversations, e-fighting and trashtalking, or other similar antics for diversion.

Listen guys, I sympathize more than most. I work 3rd shift and can attest to the fact that it gets slow at times, and it's tempting to just rustle up some action, ruffle some feathers, and cause a commotion just for the sake of interesting action. But, lets all agree to do our best to keep it in check, keep the discussions moving forward in a positive direction and we'll all be able to continue to use the site to our advantage.

This is not, by the way, NOT a big problem with DSMC at all. The board, by and large, is an exemplary community of enthusiasts who each add a valuable benefit to the rest and I can't think of a single problem member we have as I value everyone on the board and appreciate their comments and contribution. The Admins are doing a simply amazing job between the board itself and setting up DSM Exchange which is in my opinion an invaluable resource already. This is a great community with a really super base of members, so it's a testament to our collective solidarity and continuing good health that we can have discussions of this nature.

Without trying to sound too philosophical, I think the most important thing for this board to maintain is the feeling of belonging and tight-knittedness (if that's even a word). If it takes a little off-topic banter every now and then to do that, then I'm all for it. But there is a fine line there that's not always easy to see (even for the mods) that defines what is harmless offtopic banter and what is harmful to the site and its members.

Us mods are trying our hardest to keep things in perspective and be fair about it, but we're only human so its not always easy for us to find that fine line.

I agree with Kris that DSMCentral is the finest example of a car forum out there. 99% of the time the members, mods, and admins all mesh and I can think of only one bad apple that we've had to ban from the board completely during the 6+ years of dsmcentral's existence. (Remember ole TurbomeTroy?) That's a damn fine record for any board with over 700 members. I think we should all give ourselves a pat on the back and rub one off while we're at it.

I don't understand. What's different? These have always been the rules as I've understood them. No one is talking about the friendly banter and bench racing, IMO. It's more of the drama, disputes and BS that is being erradicated. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd like to think that this site is nothing like DSMtuners. DSMT has a national level following but, there is a constant flow of stupidity flowing through it. People who don't read the rules and don't use the search button before they ask questions. From time to time, yes it happens here and sometimes even to me even though I don't readily admit it all the time. I like to think though that the members of this board are smarter than 95% of the members on DSMT. The way we conduct ourselves and answer questions with research has everything to do with maturity and intelligence. Don't get me wrong, I love to parade around the house in my skivvys and act like an idiot from time to time but, we are all here for the sole purpose of gathering and sharing information about DSMs. I love the fact that we're such a tech focused site with the occasional rant to keep things interesting. If in order to keep this group as tight and composed as it has been for the three years I've been here, then I'm all for it.

I think Goat is right, the guidelines Spy mentioned have been the same from the beginning. That doesn't mean that we have ever let BS fly or enjoyed some ourselves. These guidelines are just the core that we need to center our discussions on. We have been straying a bit far lately and we just need to keep it in check. Once we start spending more time in the driver seat as warm weather approches this may not even be an issue that is thought about.

I appreciate all the kudos for a clean site. It would not be possible without the group of serious gearheads that we have here at DSMCentral. I think you all are an awesome group of people I'm very glad to know through this site.

One thing's for sure, you can't please everyone. We all do a pretty good job of being patient, understanding, giving, and honest with each other. If we could not work together in this way and ended up with the chaos found on other forums I would not be here either.

I know the cold weather is making me stir-crazy. I refuse to enter the garage until it's at least 50 degrees out. That or I've got to go get some kerosene for the heater.

Personally, I think our signal to noise ratio is pretty good. Personally I prefer tech discussions to just about anything else. That being said, there are plenty of people on this sight that I'd call friends and if they want to blow some online steam once in a while, I'm ok with that.

Is there any way that the front page can be customized so I only see new posts from the forums I select? That way if there is something in the CII forum or some other that I don't want to read, I can just not see it.

I like the spy channel idea...the smack talking is sometime fun to read when you've got the time.

I've seen some boards have some "lounge" area where anything goes, NWS stuff etc. You could make the area locked out until someone has 50 posts or something. That would let people join the board and get settled (get to know people) without being possibly offended right off the bat.

Meh, what can I say, I'm a southern climate type of guy. Lately work has been the catalyst for not working on the car and not all the parts are in yet so my excuse is I'm waiting for the parts to come in.

I dont think a strictly technical site is a very good move. If i wanted a strictly technical site iw ould just research machv or dsmtuners. After all theres no thought in my head about a dsm that somone else hasbt already asked or done. The reason dsm central should breath is a common meeting place for central illinois dsm enthusiasts. A place to chat, hang out and talk about racing at the track the night b4. Why try and make a honda-tech v2 version dsm?? Getting rid of the off topic is like taking away Lunch at work. You do nothing but work hard at your boring job (ie, the tech) but you havnt nothing fun to look foward to (ie, the ot)

I disagree with several of these points. MachV is much less than a tech-only site. Plenty of flaming and immaturity to be had. Also, there's no possible way that everything that can be done has already been thought of or asked. If that were true, there'd be no reason to get out of bed in the morning.

And finally, no one has said you can't talk about a race, possible setups and crossbreeeds or anything like that. Should I post a Q on how to fix my toyota? No. Putting a 4g63 in a toyota? Absolutely.

You also want to avoid the nws stuff as much as possible. I mean you can see boobies or penis if thats what you want to veiw all over the web, so why bring it to a car forum?

but what if it is boobies or penis on or in a dsm??? i think that should be allowed... well not the penis... thats just wrong!

but if mrs. spy wants to bust out her luscious boobies and pose with a dsm, i think that the community should see it.

i guess the dsm isnt neccesary, but it will make it car related.. regardless, i just love local talent
