Race gas is more stable than pump gas. In otherwords it burns slower. So unlike many old timers and advertizers would have you believe, race gas alone will not make your car faster, but slower if your not taking advantage of it's higher octane. To utilize higher octane you either need to turn up the boost or the timing.
Netter, if your already running lean or high on knock simply adding race gas WILL help. That's how I got to the 12's, but I also cranked up the boost even beyond my normally high knocking boost levels. If someone were so inclined to have a computer that automatically adds timing for higher octane that would make higher octane work without extra tuning. Otherwise, If race gas is added to an already stable tune on pump gas, you will not do yourself any favors gaining acceleration. Make sense? -------------------- In Loving memory of David T Crebo

Hammar Indeed Hammar. I made about 20 passes two weekends ago at Bowling Green, KY with the brick, and every one of them was between 11.80 and 12.05 @ 114-116mph. Had the boost just a little above normal street levels and an actual tune(11.8-12.0:1) instead of pig rich(10.5:1). Probably would have been 11.60-11.80 if my trans wasn't slipping in second. 60fts in the 1.62-1.68 range. All on pretty purple colored 110 race gas. Turbo cars can be consistent too. -------------------- Eric Wort

The Xylene mix at 33% by volume bumps you to around 100 octane if you start with 93. Anymore seems to not have much effect.
110 was only $3.75 a gallon in Kentucky. -------------------- Eric Wort

Marcus, you stated that with higher octane..race gas, you need to either turn up the boost or the timing. Now the boost, is raised via the mbc.
But the if we want to add timing, we do it via the CAS? How much more timing is one supposed to add? Sorry im kinda new to the timing stuff.. |

I dont know how DSM's work because they typically run more timing than other cars, but I usually add 4-5 degrees of dynamic timing and then work from there.
By dynamic timing I mean the timing thats controlled by the computer. I usually do not mess with timing below 4000rpms as well. You set (base) mechanical timing by adjusting the CAS. You can probably control the timing maps by having a eprom burnt especially for. Do AVCR's allow you to adjust timing? -------------------- 1990 Nissan 300ZX T

Yes, the base timing is adjusted via the CAS. I used to turn up the boost to a level that I thought was reasonable, then use the CAS and AFC to tune it from the base point. On race gas, it usually liked about a 6 deg bump on the base timing and -15 to 18% on the fuel side. -------------------- In Loving memory of David T Crebo

When I mean bump up the timing I mean by a more finite method such as an AEM EMS or by burning custom maps in an EPROM. I wouldn't suggest cranking up the timing by the Cam angle sensor. I have done it and it does help, but it also burns up pistons and valves in the blink of an eye. -------------------- In Loving memory of David T Crebo
