first things first...
![]() secondly... i am picking up a 90 trans and transfercase to put in my DSM this weekend. my concern is the difference in the shifter assemblies. i know that the shifter is different in the 90's as well as the linkage, the mounting bracket, and the assembly on the trans. my question is if i use the 92 linkage cable bracket (the one that is mounted on the trans) will that allow me to have all of my gears? or do i have to pull the shifter assembly out of the 90 trans and put in the assembly from my 92? from what i understand if i put the trans in AS IS i will not be able to reach 1-2 or 5-R (i can't remember which one it is) any input would be appreciated. thanks. -------------------- ![]() |

I would be wary of the axles as well. I had problems with axle fitment into my 90 trans a couple different times.

I've put 2 90 transmissions into 2 92's, if you just swap the bolt-on part of the shift levers you end up with a really nice, short shift feel, assuming the 90 trans is in good shape at all. You can overtravel and break forks if you're hamfisted with the shifter.

i was reading about the shifter feel on tuners. i guess the pivot point of the shifter is different between the 90 and 91+ as well as the bolt on shifter portion of the trans.
on the 91+ the pivot below the fulcrum on the shifter is longer and the movement of the gear selector on the trans is also longer. on the 90's both are shorter. they feel the same in the correct configuration but if you put the 90 trans into a 91+ you have a bigger movement on the shifter and a shorter movement on the gear selector so the throw into a gear become shorter. thanks for the help wort. i was also under the impression that the 3-4 gears are geared slightly different in the 90 vs the 91+. did you noticed a difference after you put in the 90 trans? i am just glad that i will have a trans in my car as well as a trans in the garage that i can start buying parts for to build. -------------------- ![]() |

i got the trans in and started filling fluids and proceeded to pour $30 in gear oil onto the garage floor. i pulled the transfercase back off and the drivers side drive shaft seal was leaking like a siv.
from what i have read you can replace the seal with out pulling the trans out. pry out the old one with a flat head screwdriver and press the new one in with a large socket and make sure seats all the way in and evenly all the way around. has anyone ever done this? the other questions (which is probably a stupid one) but can i just pull the seal out of my other trans and reuse it or do they get doestroyed when you pull them out. thanks to wort in advance -------------------- ![]() |

Yeah you got it, it should go in pretty easy. I think I used a 3" extension in the socket to help hold it while I tapped it in. I'd replace the passenger side also. I only did one when mine was leaking, and the other side started leaking two days later. Harbour Freight sells a seal driver set Seal Drivers. It probably has the right size. Or just buy a no-name cheap socket from Farm and Fleet, Autozone etc.

because they are 10-15 year old AWD transmissions that take alot of abuse from 5000+rpm launches w/ double the HP the cars came with.
and alot of people drive their dsm's like they stole them. -------------------- ![]() |
