as some of you know the tranny went out on the talon last week....i have two options...build it up mildly or buy a stock tranny....
and for those of you that have played around in the transmission, if i do build it up, what stuff should i go with to keep the cost to a minimum but still have a raceable tranny? -------------------- Stupid White Kid Racing

rebuild that sucker! from what I understand the double synchro 1st to 2nd is a must as well as the four spider center diff. go to www.shepracing.com and www.teamrip.com to do some research. they are two reputable tranny shops but are usually really expensive. What I was gonna do is buy parts from them and then see if SloPny could put those in and do the rest of the rebuild whenever I'm ready for mine. just a thought

I'd be a little surprised if you broke the 4 spider on a relatively untuned car. Especially if it is still running the same clutch that I think it is.
But I guess you'll find out soon enough when you pull the tranny and take it in. Whether or not to build up depends more on your budget. If you are on the cheap you could always buy Rob's tranny for sale and then sell your broken tranny to a parts vulture like me for and offset your cost. But chances are you will manage to break your replacement tranny as well. If you can afford it it's always a good bet to upgrade. Basicly it boils down to answering the "how much is in your budget for the rebuild?" question. -------------------- |

It all depends on what you want and how you shift and launch.
Steel shift forks were a must for me after breaking so many of the stock aluminum ones. But on the other hand many others have done all kinds of hard shifting on the stock ones without ever breaking them. See spy's post for a good sum up of the GVR4 1st. The double synchro second is a good upgrade, but I'm not sure whether its worth the money or not. I had it installed in my old fwd and did notice a small difference in the ease of throwing her into 2nd at high RPM. However, I don't have it installed in my awd and have yet to have any problems shifting it into 2nd even at 8500 RPM's, but then again previous broken dsm trannies have taught me to be a much gentler shifter than I used to be. YMMV. I have yet to hear of anyone around here breaking a stock shift rail, so I figure that one can go under the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' category. Finally, if you truly do have a 4-spider diff, and if it truly is broke, I doubt you broke it due to power output. Darryl has run numerous 10 and 9 second runs on his speed designs 4-spider with no problems whatsoever. Maybe yours was machined improperly and therefore prolly not a speed designs diff. Or maybe its not broke. Or maybe its not a 4-spider diff. ![]() |

If I remember correctly he said it was not a Speed Design center-diff and when I had the diff in my hands it did not appear to be a Speed Design unit. That tranmission is a 90 model. I have two complete 90 tranmissions on hand right now. They both function but most likley have shifting issues. If your looking to go a cheaper route this may help you.
