 96 GST Transmission help, Whining noise |

I'm getting a whining sound only while accelerating in second and up.
I took it to the transmission shop, and the owner said that I need to replace my "load bearings"?? I'm not exactly sure what and/or how to fix this. I was wondering if anyone can help me rebuild my transmission OR know of an alternate solution. Price estimates?? Any help would be great - Thanks in advance! - |

By the way, what is a good price for a transmission rebuild? And what is all done for a transmission rebuild? |

You can get the labor done at slow pony for $150 for thier "DSMCentral Special" (Assuming that it's still good). New syncros and seals ran about $150-175 for my rebuild. You should be able to get by for under $400 as long as you don't need major parts.

Sounds like the transmission is a common problem for the DSMer's.

well, talked to slowpony. Sounds like it may cost me an extra 150 to take out the transmission and installing it back. How hard is it to do this myself?

Ever pulled a tranny before? Personally I can pull one and re-install it in about 3 hours fairly easily... first time took me 2 days. I'd reccomend having them do it if you've never tackled something like that before, especially if you need the car back together in a timely manner!!

I say just do it yourself if you have the time and a good set of tools. That's the only way to learn. If you planning on modding DSM's for a while I guarantee that you will have to do pull the tranny again for one reason or another.

i'm with nate and spy on this one. It's worth the $150 to do it yourself. Besides if you drive dsm's you might as well learn to pull your tranny. I've never done one alone, but i did one with kou. After that experience, i'd never pay to have my tranny pulled or put back in. (and like AWD DSM 1 said, if i tried to do one by myself now, it'd probally take 2 days.
 )
