As some of you know, I've been having trouble with my BR500 burning oil (A LOT of oil) due to blow-by past the turbine side oil seal. I originally thought that it was crappy design causing the seal to fail, but I thought I'd investigate a little further.

I finally found a thread on tooners that confirms I am not the only one with this problem:

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread...light=pte+turbo

In a nut shell, it was discovered that the pte designed turbos (same as BR series turbos) don't like the high oil pressure that 4g63's with no balance shafts produce esp. when the oil is fed from the filter housing rather than the head. Oil pressure that can be in excess of 110 psi at high RPM. The solution to this problem is introducing a restrictor orifice in the feed line to decrease oil pressure before the turbo.

I purchased this restrictor from Winner's Circle and drilled it out with a 5/64" drill bit as suggested in the thread. Since I use -4AN line to feed the turbo this reduces my oil pressure to the chra into the neighborhood of 55 to 60 psi at high RPM WOT instead of 100 to 110 psi. This has effectively reduced my smoking to a slight puff out the tailpipe rather than a huge cloud.

Needless to say, I am pleased, and recommend this to anyone who is having trouble with their PTE designed turbo burning oil. Keep in mind that BR, AMS, and SBR all sell the PTE designed turbos under different names.

Good deal Nate! Glad to hear that solved you last oil dilema. Does this mean you can remove the vaccum pump?

I think I'm going to keep the vac pump on there. It will keep my overall oil pressure down, which solved my problem of blowing oil filter gaskets. It can't hurt and it actually helps the rings seal and causes there to be less backpressure against the pistons especially at high RPM.

That's cool that you figured out what was wrong, but you think that the turbo company would specify up front how much oil needs to be fed to the turbo for it to stay healthly!

Yeah, I'm certainly not happy about that. I almost wonder if PTE is even aware of the crazy high oil pressures that bs-less 4g63's run. One guy in that thread actually sent his turbo back to PTE and the seals passed the vacuum test. They sent the turbo back to him and he was still having oil blow past his seals until he performed this fix to lower the oil pressure to the turbo.

PTE is too used to Buicks and their crappy oiling system. A Buick in decent shape is lucky to see 60psi at WOT.
