Well the saga continues....
Drive to work th last few time, the engine picked up a stutter at a steady state cruise. It would stutter/cutout 2-3 times in quick succession and then run fine. Well this morning it does it twice and I turn around and head back to the house. Come to a stop sign and it starts running REALLY rough, engine sound like it was throwing parts around inside. Any ideas? Can a bad ignition coil cause a stutter? Bad plug wires? -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

Pull the plugs first. I had this problem with the truck. Turned out to be I was buying gas from a spot here in town that is selling watered down gasoline. Changed the plugs and I've been buying from a better grade station and it's all good.
Visit www.toptiergas.com when you get a chance. Basically, this is happening a lot around the nation and four automakers are doing something about the crappy gasoline. -------------------- "I hear he tunes the space shuttle also...and that thing is fast"

I wouldn't rule out the idea of a clogged filter, too. Unless of course you just replaced it.

I pulled the codes last night and got a 44:Ignition coil. Kind of forgot I could do that
I'm going to pull the coil and transitor out today and check them today. -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

Looks like the ignition transistor took a crap.
Anybody got a spare? It's the 7 pin module. -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

Well I picked up another transistor from Mitsu90-thanks!
Brought it home and rechecked the one on the car and the new one. Apparently the first time I checked the transistor on the car I was doing something wrong, because it works fine. Per the Haynes guide, it has continuity with a 1.5V applied to the proper pins and none when power is disconnected. I checked both transistor and they work the same. So I rechecked the coil: The primary voltage should be in the .7-.86 ohm range and it measures .8 across pins 3-2 and .7 ohm across 3-1-so OK Secondary voltage should be 11,300-15,300 and mine measure 12,860 and 12,980-so OK I checked the plugs-all look the same I checked the wires, all have resistance between 3.24 and 5.37 k-ohm. The longer wires have more resistance, so that seems correct. I did mist water on the wires with it running to seem if there was any cross firing, I saw nothing. Any other ideas? I need to check the fuel filter as Goat suggested...but that wouldn't explain the code 44. Anybody had a coil or transitor test good but still be bad?? I'm going to be pissed (and releived) if it was just a loose connection. -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

I had this problem with the 1G. I had a white powder (or that is what it looked like) inside the plug holes. My plug boots were sparking of the head, which made the white residue in the plug chamber.
Just an idea, and my 2 cents. How old are the caps in the ecu? The 1g also did that with a bad ecu. I could drive for 2 hours and then it would act like it was losing power and cut out bad. Then it would just die and I had to wait for the ecu to cool down before I could start it again. -------------------- |

I checked the spark plug holes, clean, just a little oil in the bottom like every other dsm
Cap's were replaced when I bought the car so <3 years old. I'll probably check them, need to replace it with my eprom ecu anyway... -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???
