I have a 1999 mitsubishi eclipse rs and i have been looking into a JDM motor swap. I was looking into the 4g63 cyclone but im told that it wouldnt mount up right and it would be very hard to do. What would be a good turbo motor i could swap with?

Yes it will be very difficult. You actually don't even have a 4g63 in your car now. The 2g NA cars have the chrysler 420a 2.0 motor. The swap would require you to swap wiring harnesses, ECUs, Motors, Trannies, along with a million other things. I'm not sure anyone has ever tried this, especally with a 99, since it's still fairly new. My suggestion, even though it might not be what you want to hear, is to sell your car, and find an AWD. You'll be much happier in the long run, and have a lot of extra cash in your pocket.
If you really want to keep your car and go turbo, look at the hahn racecraft turbo kits. They seem to be the best around. Just my .02 Good luck Rob -------------------- The fastest car I own is a minivan....

I thought I was loosing my mind How hard would a 99 GSX motor swap to a 1G 6 bolt? Any big benifits? You were probably looking at '99 RS or GS models which are powered by Chrysler's 420A. 6-bolt swap into a 2G GSX is fairly easy. It has been done by many people. There are good instructions on www.magnusmotorsports.com . Super16G has done this swap. |

Ok seriously....90000 for a 99 would be a lot for any other car....but my new brother, you are driving a mitsu. Your motor will run forever ......or until you start heavily moding the rs...as long as you take good care of her she will take care of you. So go ahead..."slap" that turbo on there; you've got at least another good 100,000 miles to go bro . LMAO ha ha hah a ha. sorry I don't know that just came over me lol

correct me if I'm wrong here wise men of the dsm.......but the turbo really has nothing to do with crankwalk.....it's about the power to the clutch that'll get ya. and if you have a stock rs there is no reason why you should have crank walk.

That's one theory Katie.
Also, keep in mind it's the 4g63 that crankwalks, you've got a 420a under your hood. These motors are not even made by the same companies. If you are really worried about it, to replace the motor with a low milage one (30-40k) you will probably be looking at upwards of $1000, just for the motor. You could rebuild it also, but that would be even more expensive. Trust me, I just did it. Rob -------------------- The fastest car I own is a minivan....

i didnt say a turbo caused crank walk i just said that the 2nd gen motors are known for crank walk... Thanks for answering my question though. I am trying to find a way i should do this if i should get a motor and turbo that or if i should just turbo this one.... i dont want to get a new car because i already have around $3500 into this one.

Correction: 2nd gen Mitsu-built 4G63's are known for getting crankwalk. Your motor is Chrysler's 420A. You don't have to worry about crankwalk. I'd save your money and just put a hahn turbo kit on your current motor, as long as it has been well taken car of. Either that or sell the RS, buy a cheap 1g, and use the left over cash to make it fast. |

As far as I know all Eclipse's have the 4G63 motor, but 95+ versions are known for crankwalk. 1G 4g63 motors are good i believe, I havent heard of crankwalk in those, or its very rare to happen.

Thank you Nate... I was just going to do that.
Unless you have a 7 bolt, 4g63 motor in your car, you should have no worries of your motor crankwalking. I'd be more worried about melting pistions from too much boost, which is a very easy problem to avoid... keep the boost turned down!! -------------------- The fastest car I own is a minivan....

thanks guys!! well with this motor im going to get a turbo kit but im not worried about ruining the motor from to much boost because at most i will probably run about 6 to 7 pounds... or do you think that is to much? By the way do you know the stock compression for a 99 rs eclipse?

Get in contact with Hahn. I'm sure they can answer all your questions about turbocharging the 420A. Jason_ESI_T on this list may also have some insight for you.

Hmm didnt realize that the 94 4G63 motor was as much of a risk of crankwalking as a 2G, i assumed it was very rare for that year. I must have gotten lucky with mine. It made it 125,000 wonderful miles before a buick lesabre car destroyed it. LOL
Anyways my plan is to get a 97-99 Eclipse GSX and eventually do a 6 bolt 4G63 swap after i get the car paid down a bit. I will prob have it built up a bit so i can run higher boost and not break it. I read the thing on magnusmotorsports and it doesnt seem to be a big deal to do. My question can the stock tranny, turbo and such for that year can be kept, i wont need a 1G tranny would I? Plus is a manual better to have than a Auto for a turbo car? Thanks -------------------- 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS- Pretty daily driver

The Magnus swap is the way to go and as for the trans. 1g trans, 2g trans, they bolt up the same. Do you have an Auto and thinking of a man. swap? Cause I wouldnt recomend that headache.

No I dont have on yet, looking into getting one within the next year. I definatly decided on getting a 97-99 GSX, black with a sunroof. Thats what im gonna be watching for. Unmodded if possible. Im prob looking at about 18 grand or so for one. I would drive it basically stock for the first few years of ownership, then start modding it with a 6 bolt 4g63 motor, bigger turbo and such. Im new to the whole thing, so i got alot of learning to do on turbo cars before i do anything to it. So my question for the experts is would a manual tranny be better to have than an auto? I find it boring to drive an Auto car, manuals are more fun, but is there any advantage to either one? Im not a fan of DSM auto trannys, i have 2 cars that both had bad trannys. My rebuilt tranny isnt even right, but cant do nothing about it now.
