that's strange that it would loose power at a certain speed vs. a particular RPM range. When does it do it? All the time? Which gear? RPM? etc.

Way too many things to guess. You need to make a cheap code reader or borrow a logger.

ok, get this. i have a logger, no codes i really haven't gotten a chance to log my car as of yet, mabye tomorrow or something. it losses power in 2nd gear and up. the car will hustle till 45 then around then it will feel as if its trying to hard, teh revs dont go up as fast, the car just losses the pull. i have a 2.5 mb exhaust, kn, 14lbs, rfl bov. i dont know what the matter is, my cousins awd kept up with me from a roll!!!!

I can only guess a ECU. Or you knock sensor, but that throws a code. 33 I think, but don't quote me

Is your car a auto? If so, check the tranny fluid, change it.

nah, i dont think its the ecu, i just looked at it the other day, looked perfectly fine. the car is a five speed. where exactly is the knock sensor? i know its behind the #2 clylinder or something? just haven't had time to look at it. how hard is it to get off?

The knock sensor is a bitch to take off. It has a plastic type backing that wears off over time causing the little spring thing to go off.
Also you can't tell if your ecu is okay or not. If you don't know for a fact that the caps have been done, I'd do them. |

i just logged my car. i have 20+ counts of knock when i get on it in 2nd gear and in 3rd. will a boost leak cause a lot of knock? can this in anyway be timing related? how do i check to see if my timing is ok? please help.

Maybe you and I should have a car day. My talon is having bogging ,timming pulling problems. It's been a problem for about 3 weeks or so. It seems to be getting worse and I really need to address the problem. For both of us, it is probably just the knock sensor worn. However, it could be fuel delivery of some sort too. I know the compression on my engine is great. I just tested it. So, it is a sensor or fuel problem for me.
Who has that logger again? I know I need to order a logger, but something always comes up ![]() Q: I've heard this question latly and I think the answer is no, but I'm not fully sure. Can a boost leak cause knock? If anything the car would just run extra rich from the missing intake air right? I can't think of anything that would cause knock from a boost or intake leak. I would think power would only be lost from the missing pressure. Any thoughts? William |

Running excessively rich can cause knock just like running lean can. Many dsmer's have documented this at the phantom knock yahoo group. One theory is that left over unburnt fuel remains in the cylinder and detonates during a non-combustion stroke.

firstly, does anyone know how i can post up the readings from the logger? i want to paste up the log and let someone who knows take a look at it. im not really sure what the specs are supposed to be and all. natedogg you made a good point, mabye we can see if im running rich from the injector duty cycle thing on the logger. again, thanks a lot.
hey i think if we meet up it would be a great idea, mabye after we get our problems fixed, we can have a few runs... although im not sure if i would be able to make it, school and all is making it real tough. where exactly are you? if we do meet, mabye it will be somewhere near addison or chicago if you would like. |

To post the logger files you have to convert them to excel-type .csv files. These can be easily downloaded and viewed by anyone who has excel or other spreadsheet programs.

A boost leak?! If you have a boost leak you definitely feel the power fall off onec the turbo builds enough boost to break the seal where the leak is. You haven't expounded on this idea, but I assume that you have checked for boost leaks. Marcus -------------------- In Loving memory of David T Crebo

well, i checked for leaks, and to tell the truth i didn't find any. the car holds the boost so it is safe to say that there are no boost leaks right? although i do hear like something like air rushing through a pipe when i drive my car, so this is why i keep coming back to this problem. my mas is not hacked at all. should i tune my car with an s-afc? i mean there has to be a reason why its knocking in teh first place right? thats why i haven't let the afc loose on it yet.

Go ahead and hack the MAS. If you are overrunning it, it will miss counts which will cause the ECU to retard timing.

ok, the last time i took off my honeycomb and silencer, my car was running real lean. my only guess on what to to do is make everything back to stock and see what happens. should i tune out the knock with an s-afc or not?

Huh. You're the first guy I've ever run across that had a problem running too lean after talking out the honeycomb and silencer. If you don't want to do that I suppose you could do some SAFC tuning. Josh and I tuned a lot of knock out of his car using the SAFC in conjunction with the MAP sensor mod shown in this link. http://www.2gnt.com/www/corbin/foolafc.html It basically makes it the SAFC tune according RPM and boost rather than RPM and throttle position. |

yea, im gonna try real hard to post up my log, first ill do it with the honeycombs, then without. when i had the honeycombs out, my car would make "popping" noises out of the exhaust when i would get on it. when i put the lower honeycomb and silencer back in, the popping dissapeared. this problem has been buggin me for a while now, actually ever since i started getting mods. i guess when i first bought it, it never did it, after i got the kn,and turboback and hacked the mas, it started. what really makes me mad is that i cant race when someone talks trash. now i know for sure that getting on it is not good for my car,(at least not yet) i cant push it at all. these friends of mine who have civics, have been talking trash for a while because i haven't raced them, because i didn't want to race with my car not running at 100%, so i really want to get this fixed and show em who's boss. thanks A LOT guys.
