That depends on what you are trying to discover. It won't tell you anything about the wastegate actuator because with no boost source signal it will never actuate. Its a good way to figure out how much boost your engine can take before utter destruction though. In other words, either Joe P was TOOHA or you misunderstood him.
 You never want to run without a boost signal to the WG actuator especially on a turbo as large as yours. Very dangerous.
