Can't they do a title search and get it cleared up? I'd say, unless it's been reported stolen, that if you have the car and the title for the car in your posession, you've got a good leg to stand on. Probably be a good idea to contact the authorities just to make it clear that you aren't the one that caused the mess in the fisrt place.
