if I can ever get a hold of a trailer I will be picking up a 91 TSI 5 speed. and with the death of my 92 TSI auto. I was wondering could I swap the 92's 4 bolt rear end with the 91's 3 bolt?? from what I have heard the are geared different. could I swap out the gears and make this work?

I don't see any reason why you'd have to change the center diff if you are changing the gears in the auto 4-bolt rear end to match the manual rear end. This should make it all manual AWD gearing like any manual AWD car.

The one problem I could see you running into is not all 3-bolt AWD rear-ends were limited slip. You could run into a problem with LSD vs. non-LSD compatibility, but I don't know for sure.
