Has anybody installed the symborski shifter kit on their car? I fabbed up my own ghetto kit tonite because I was hating the way that my 91 TSi felt when I shifted. Well I still dont like cable shifters, but it does feel about 200% better. I basically took the old rubber gromets out, put washers underneath of the shifter plate and drilled\cut some 1\8" aluminum that I had laying around so that the bolt fir snugly through it and placed these ghetto washers on top of the shifter plate. I then re-adjusted the shifter cables and bolted it all down tightly. I can now tell what gear I am in and if I'm all the way in gear. Shifting seriously feels ALOT better\confident, if you havnt bought this kit I would reccomend either purchasing it from Mach V or fabbing your own kit as I did. I also installed an EVO VIII knob which looks and feels great. It shortened the throw quite a bit and matches rather nicely.

I've got some problems with my shift linkage, and since the topic was up...
I've got the "moving 5th gear" problem in my Laser, and I'm convinced its in the linkage. A little background...I had the trans rebuilt when I bought the car, and tthe guy who did it had an idea to shorten the throw and he put a new pillar on the shift lever on the trans (I know I'm prolly using the wrong terms but its all I know to describe it). It did shorten the throw alot, but my 5th gear didn't feel solid, and it moves when I get on and off the gas, and sometimes pops out of gear. I havn't even put the car in 5th now for quite a while just because it makes me nervous. I put the linkage on the stock pillar, and it solved my 5th gear problem, but then it wouldn't go into 3rd at all. I know it has to be in the linkage somewhere, and I've tried adjusting it to no avail. I am kinda struck for ideas here, but through process of elimination I know it must be the linkage (I read about a retaining nut on the 5th gear syncro on the Talon Digest that caused this problem, but I checked mine and it was fine). If anyone thinks they can fix this problem, or knows how, please let me know. Nick Mullen Danville, IL GusNM15000@aol.com 1990 Laser RS Turbo |
