With all the rain today in my 'garage', I wasn't able to drop my completed engine in. So I took the time to tear down my old, original shortblock.
I found that one of my rod bearings decided to try turning in the rod instead of turning on the crank. It probably only spun once or twice, but its still kind of scay. It wasn't knocking at all. The crank looks just fine on that rod journal, but its probably a little out of round due to the spun bearing. -------------------- Eric Wort

Yeah, it actually went pretty quickly with my dad helping me, and I borrowed a mini-impact wrench and a Snap-On 'Techwrench' from my uncle. It was a breeze to get the engine in and out without the transmission in the way.
Your tranny does have the little ball bearing that retains the shaft doesn't it? It seemed adequate for holding in the shaft to me, but I don't have a spool either. -------------------- Eric Wort
