OK. So im pretty sure ive got a stuck valve. I first heard it when I was coming home from work this afternoon. It sounded like something rattling or something hitting against the radiator fan. Well I got her home and started listening around. I took a short piece of 1\4ID pvc tubing I had and held it against my ear and the other end against the motor and other various parts under the hood and tried to track down where the sound was coming from. It seemed to be loudest right around the timing belt cover so I took the top part of the TB cover off and it seems to be coming from behind the cam gears. So I'm assuming that I have a stuck valve. The only thing that confuses me is that the car runs fine and at higher RPM's the noise goes away. Does this sound right? I noticed on the drive home that I only hear the noise at certain RPM's but I never truely got on it and barely got above 0 PSI. I of course havnt driven the car since. I'm gonna run some valve cleaner through it tonite to see if that makes any difference. Anybody have any suggestions\advice? Thanks!

Oh yeah. This is deffinately not lifter tick. Out of the four DSM's ive owned all have had lifter tick except this one. It has never ticked except for the few weeks when we had sub-zero temps. The motor only has less than 40K on the top end and under 20K on the bottom end. Like I said, the car runs great and the noise goes away above ~2800 RPM's. I ran some Lucas fuel system cleaner through it and still nothing.

Does the frequency of the noise increase with increasing RPMs? Have you ruled out a rod knocking?

My 95 ticks like a SOB... I assume it's lifters, but not sure yet. I don't know if I'm gonna wait til it actually breaks to fix it, or try swapping heads around to solve the problem. I hate not knowing what's wrong with my car... really sucks. I feel your pain Mark.... actually, I think most of us do.... biggthumpup.gif

I havnt ruled out a rod knocking. I havnt really ruled out anything, lol. I was just kinda starting from the bottom and working my way back up. I'm gonna get and Oil Pressure Gauge and change the oil then check the pressure. The oem Oil Pressure gauge doesnt work (most of the dash gauges dont) and then ill go from there. I'll post and update when I find what is wrong. Thanks guys! I'll also do a compression test but I'm assuming that the valve is frozen shut if it is, so its not like a compression test will do any good in that case.

Ive got kind of the same thing. makes noise from 2 grand to 2,800. I also had the head rebuilt recently.( doesnt sound like a tick anyways)
But, I contribute it too an exhaust leak as that is what mine sounds like and the fact that it disapears sometimes. (when it was colder I could see smoke coming from under the engine) maybe you have the same thing.

Well I do have an exhaust leak as that stud is broken off of the O2 housing, but im pretty sure this noise is coming from inside the motor its self.

Well it is not a collapsed lifter. I just pulled them all out and they look fine. I'm gonna put it back together and perform a compression test. Argh....

OK. So now I dropped a god damn valve cover bolt into the lower T-belt cover. Any suggestions? I stuck a jack under the motor and took the motor mount that is in the way off and I still cant see to the bottom of the cover to find the bolt. Do I have to take all of the belts\pullies off to get the cover the rest of the way off?

I dont even know where the bolt is. For all I know it might have not even fallen down there, but it didnt hit the ground so im not gonna stop looking for it till I find it or I'm sure my timing belt will find it.
