like most people know....i have a SAFC and the GM MAF translator on my car.....i guess the first step in tuning my car is to get rid of one of them....which one should i go with? and which datalogger is better----the one on the laptop or the one on the palm pilot?

I'd stick with the translator. For the better spool of the GM MAF alone its got to be worth it. Plus 5% is usually enough if you have an AFPR to make up the rest.

A datalogger is a datalogger. They both read the same exact data and show it to you. I would go with whichever you have. If you have a laptop, get the laptop version, yada yada.

I paid $150 for a used SAFC. I would think a used SAFC II would fetch $200-$250.

I wouldn't totally get rid of your SAFC until you're sure that you can tune with the MAFT. If you've got version 2.08 of the MAFT chip you're supposed to be able to tune nearly as well as with the SAFC. BUT, v2.08 has JUST been released w/in the past couple of weeks as an upgrade to the older versions, so you probably don't have that yet.

We have been having some problems tuning midrange RPMs with the MAFT alone. It seems that the global nature of tuning with the MAFT doesn't allow accurate tuning based on RPMs...rather, it seems to be more airflow-mediated. The SAFC, on the other hand might be better for tuning at specific RPMs and/or RPM ranges.

There's no reason that you can't have both. I see all kinds of people using both. Use the translator to get it close and the SAFC for the fine tuning by RPM.

In my personal experience, I've had a lot more luck tuning with the MAFT than the SAFC. I was always messing with the settings on the SAFC to get the car to run right in different conditions. The MAFT is more set it and forget it. But, I've never used them in conjunction so that may make the SAFC less finicky.

no, theres not even one that goes directly into a palm. With a palm you need a hotsync cable to attach to the pocketlogger cable.

Yes TMO makes one compatible for a laptop. If you already have a laptop it's not a bad idea but I've found it a little unwieldy personally. You can pick up cables for $30 and there are free source (tunerstein) software programs out there for logging.

At one point I'd planned on using both the Translator and an S-AFC. What sold me on ditching the SAFC though was reading Mike Licht mentioning that he had yet to see anyone make more power with the SAFC/Translator combo, than on the translator alone.

That was enough to convince me along with the ease of use, cheaper overall pricetag, and fewer piggybacks.

Just my $0.02.

so if i already have the laptop i can pick up the cables for cheap and download my own software? that sounds like a better idea....

where are you getting data link (laptop) cables for 30 bucks? I've only seen them for about 300. Have I just not been looking hard enough or what?

Saweet! Thanks AWD I'm currently in the process of picking one of those up now. I'm going for the laptop version.
