another question....i believe that the only thing im gonna do to my trans is put the double synchro second gear in....now is there a certain year that these came stock in the trans? and i've also heard people say that you can only use a 90' trans in a 90' car....is that true?

The 90 tranny has a 22 spline output shaft that mates to the 22 spline transfercase. 91+ trannies have a 23 spline. You can use the 92 tranny, but you will have to get a 23 spline transfercase. Everything else is the same.

sounds like a 92 or up trani might be your best case senerio. I dont think that transfer cases are all that crazy expensive, then you could sell yours.

so as long as you get the t-case with the tranny, you can use a later year trans?

Yes! And it's the 92 transmissions built in May or anytime there after that use the double second gear synchros. I believe it was the same time they switched to the 7-bolt engine. Keep in mind if you do get this later transmission that the third and forth gears are known to be a bit weaker than the earlier units with only a single synchro second gear. TRE sells the double synchro 2nd kit, but I believe something needs to be machined to fit it in the earlier tranny's. Sheppard did mine....good juob but pricey!

Also, if you are putting a '92 trans into a '90 car you have to switch the the '92 shifter cable brackets to the '90 to get it to shift correctly. Either that or change to a '91 or later shifter assembly. See the following link for more info. The shifter cable bracket info is at the bottom of the page.

somebody slap me if I'm wrong, but I just had this conversation with wortdogg and kou the other night... I'm only stating this for clarification. Wortdogg really knows the specifics on the year double synchro info, and I want to say he said it was only the 'late' 92's, I can't recall. But, for yoursake I thought I'd raise the issue.

May is concidered the "later" models. Most people look for the "early" ones to get the 6/4 combo. Remember production begins the summer before for a model year. (92's would have been started to be built in the summer of 91)

Yeah, Marcus has it right, by late 92's I meant the 92.5 7-bolt cars they started making sometime in May. My car was made in the middle of April, so its a fairly late car for a 92 6/4.

I was wondering with Travis if maybe there were a select few rare 92's that got a 6-bolt, a double synchroed second, and the strong 3/4 gearset. But I was being optimistic about that, and doubt that ever occured. Mine definately had the single synchro 2nd.
