Wouldn't a faster burn be more likely to produce pre-ignition (knock) of the charge, though? Hmmm, unless you're saying that less timing shortens the "cycle" enough to sort of compensate for pre-ignition?

They were running almost right on the line where pump gas just starts to diesel(I think 12.5-13:1 CR range). With running low timing they still had control, but it was also right on the line. That's why a lot of pump gas guys stay with low compression pistons while race gas guys can run 10:1 and 40psi.
