K once again a problem w/ the 1.8...its the same problem i was just having. It sounds like its back firing w/ a load popping noise every once in a while and the car is jolting. I chased down exactly where the noise is coming from which is the mass...right inside of the intake filter. Im going to go into town here pretty soon and pick up a new filter and some plug wires but i dont believe that will fix my problem....there was a lose hose that i found but i also dont think that was the problem either....if you guys could help me out at all i would be very greatfull...hopefully you can help me by even telling me there is something i need to buy that i would be able to pick up...iv still got a warranty on my maf so if that ends up being the problem i would be able to get another one free of charge...help me out if you can

There shouldnt be anything there to make noise, are you sure its not just echoing through the intake pipe? Have you put a new cap and rotor on the car yet? The problem with my 1.8 is that it keeps ruining distributors, breaks the coil or somethign on the inside which is causing me to have no spark. Just a thought that yours could be going bad also. Just taking a stab in the dark, cause thats the only thing that keeps going bad on my car.

Edit: the only thing i that would come to mind is some kind of electrical short with the mas, there isnt anything else that i can think of that would make any noise besides maybe a loose part or something.

Well i took the mass out and then retightend all the screws and looked at the conections i could see inside the mass and everything looked alright...ill try replacing the distributor cap and rotor and see if that does anything....right when i got to advanced today they closed the doors so ill have to go back tomorrow to buy wires and such
Thanks for the tip

This thing is driving me crazy......it would make sense for it to be the wires or the distributor if it wasnt like backfiring through the intake. Its not just a echo in the intake...its actually coming from inside the filter itself...i really hope that after i get wires and a distrubtor the problem is fixed but im not so sure that will do the trick at all. Ive spent multiple hours looking for exhaust leaks w/ my eye...does anyone else have any better ways to look for an exhaust leak?

A good soapy water solution is great for tracking down leaks and such around gaskets. Other than that, I don't know what to tell ya.
