I thought it would be interesting to know what gearhead folk lore is floating around out there that has been proven NOT always true, yet people still try to pass the info as fact!!!
lets start with this..... Bigger cubic inch equals faster E.T's -------------------- You CAN sleep in your car, but your CAN NOT race your house!!!

i'd go with that one as being true......more cubic inches, more power you CAN make.....doesnt mean it IS always faster, but it has the potential to be....

lets not get back on the same topic we did on that thread about the LS1
this thread was not intended to cause drama this thread was intended for the simple purpose of identifying common gear head folk-lore the fact is that more cube's doesn't always make more power.... depends on lots of factors.... and bigger cube's would not nessesarily produce faster E.T.'s there was a test by HotRod Magazine back in the day that I read (I found an old issue) they tested a '69 Camaro with a 350 small block vs. a '69 Camaro with a 396 Big block the two cars had vastly different power, almost identical E.T's, but the trap speed on the Big Block was lots higher, due to weight distribution and traction problems -------------------- You CAN sleep in your car, but your CAN NOT race your house!!!

Not exactly "gearhead" lore, but the belief that louder bass makes your system sound the best.
Marvel Mystery oil will fix anything. Cutting holes in your airbox will give you 15 more hp. -------------------- Somebody make the pain stop. They won't let me go.

its common sense when you think about it...no, bigger cubes does not ALWAYS mean more power....example you could have a 600 horspower 4g63 and a 500 horsepower 383 stroker.....BUT, you ALWAYS have more POTENTIAL to make more power with more cubes.....get me?

Taking 1 qt of oil out the pan (usually of a 5 qt oil pan) will free up a few more ponies (5-10).
Cooler gas gives more hp. Bigger the cam the better. No such thing as too big of a carb, just not enough motor. |

Funny thing is I've never met Dan, but like most guys on here and Cii we're all cool around each other in person. Except for Bernie, he's just a big douche bag in real life like on Cii...LOL!

I'm going with awd4me on this one. All things being equal, i.e. traction, compression, boost, fuel, cams, etc; With an equal 60', physics dictates that you will accelerate at a higher rate. Note that this has nothing to do with potential hp. Design and layout of the engine have a lot to do with the theoretical hp ceiling of a given engine. I am referring to internal strength, valvetrain layout, etc. If you look at the specific output of modern modified 4 cylinder, DOHC engines, you would see that if the import companies decided to make v8 engines, they would make far more power than even the venerable LS1. For example: An LS1 makes 350 hp (giving a bonus). That is 61.xx hp/lt. Build a 5.7l DOHC engine. Maybe even give it VTEC. At Hondas top specific output of 120hp/lt, you are looking at a stock engine with approx. 684 hp. Take that even further with mods or forced induction, up the specific output to around 220hp/lt, and you have a daily driver grocery-getter with approx 1254 hp. I would love to see a relatively tame small-block chevy put down 1200hp. Possible, but not likely. I understand that the engine I am talking about does not exist, but it is for illustrative purposes, to show that there is more to power potential than displacement.

VTEC isn't something you can give an engine, its a system that switches from one cam lobe to bigger cam lobes. I'm getting rid of VTEC with my new setup. Just some big narly lobes all the time. When you never drop below 6K rpm, its pointless.
The more air and the faster you burn it = more power. As displacement (or amount of air you cram in the cyliner via turbo) increases, so does power. As rpm increases, so does power. As long as you have the components to go along with it though. -------------------- |

Mike, I understand how VTEC works. I was using that particular system as a demonstrative variable in regards to the valvetrain layout and related technology currently available. My hatch does not have VTEC, but it puts down more power (whp) than a comparable SOHC VTEC EX. The reason is the cam profile. What I was stating, in a nutshell, is that the level of engineering put into a given design can be the difference between a great engine and a dinosaur. Look at the current 2.2l Ecotec vs the decade-old H22 (far more advanced) and you'll see what I mean. Or the 3800 series2 vs the VQ35, or even the VG30DE. Bottom line is that development has a lot to do with the potential output of a given powerplant. Displacement, when given all of the advantages, could be directly linked to power output, and therefore, higher traps/ lower ets.

QUOTE You know that feeling I was talking about? I was right. Only this time, instead of being a measly piston, it was the crank. So at least I got that going for me, which is nice. I hate my car. No really. I hate it. I believe my FWD to be the lovechild of Dan and Shamou back when they were still on speaking terms. It went from freshly rebuilt to freshly torn down in 147 miles. I beat Marcus' record. I rock. even though this has nothing to do with the thread at hand... I created it so it doesn't matter..... I just saw your sig...and I found it funny, cause I had nearly the same situation only transmission problems is what my car is cursed with.... it started out with syncro's... I fix that and the whole trani fails in less than 150 miles (two days) and here's the best part ... spy once owned my car -------------------- You CAN sleep in your car, but your CAN NOT race your house!!!

Spy looked at my car... Thought about buying it. Come to think of it, he rode a lot in Marcus' car, too. SPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You nasty little saboteur!
