I really need to get my talon going and as much as i hate automatics, i really dont even want to try to fix the automatic in my car... soooo, does anybody have, or know about any cheap cars with a 5speed and probably a blown motor or something. all i want it for is the transmission and all the parts needed to convert it over. or if you know all of the parts i would need and want to sell me thoes, that would work too. It needs to be FWD, and i think the axle splines are different on 93s and 94s, so it would have to be one of thoes considering my car is a 93. any out there???? reply or PM me biggthumpup.gif

thanks.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but I have found a 91 eclipes
that has a 1.8 non turbo , 5 speed , body is in good shape. My Uncle
says that it has no tittle , and can be had cheap. I would say a
couple bills easy. And this is a tow away car. Good for parts only!!
If this helps let me know !

Send a PM to AWD DSM 1, he has a few trannies up for grabs, and I'm sure between members' stockpiles and KOU, you'll be able to get all the linkage and related parts.

I'm pretty sure that the 1.8 tranny won't bolt up to your motor, totally different animals.

I'm not sure, but the 90 may have a different axle spline count... although a 90 AWD will work in a 91+ awd at least axle-wise. It's the xfer case that has the odd spline count there.

the 1.8 and 2.0 non turbo motors came with the same transmission. it will bolt right up, and then the fwd turbos have a stronger version of the transmission, and awds have obviously, the turbo trans but in an awd configuration. as long as the front axels are the same. i should be fine. can you find anything more out about this for me grimy4?

zacd is right, i know for a fact 1.8 and 2.0 auto trannies are identical, not sure if there would be a difference with a manual. 2.0 turbo and non turbo still share the same block and bolt pattern for the trannys right?

btw i know just this past weekend there was a 92 eclipse with front clip damage for 250 bucks, located in quincy IL i could find the number for you if interested, i would imagine for 250 bucks its probably a 1.8, but im sure the tranny would be salvageable

Really? Just seems odd I guess....

If you're serious about the swap, I have a 92 MT 1.8 that I can get you everything you need for the swap (save a mt turbo ECU) for $200, and I'll even pull it for you. Never offered it up before because I thought the parts were different. wacko.gif

yeah i assumed the blocks would be different, but apparently they are very similar for the bolt up. Internally im not sure if there is a difference, but ive been using a 2.0 auto trans in my 1.8 for over 2 years now without a problem.

why would i need a different ecu? isnt it the same. there is an extra auto transmission computer, but would trash that with the swap. both the 2.0's n/a and turbo are almost identical blocks. one exception is the oil squirters, but other than that (and different pistons it should be the same)...

but yes, this 1.8 92 sounds good. where are you at?

the ECUs are NOT the same. If you put a 1.8 ECU in a turbo car you would have the most rediculously screwed up fuel maps on the planet. Remember, the ECU in the 1.8 is programmed to send fuel to a smaller motor with smaller injectors.

You could just buy a turbo ecu though and everything should work fine and dandy.

I think that zacd was reffering to the auto vs MT...

I guess you wouldn't, you'll still have the 390cc injectors, so the maps should be ok. Only reason to go to a MT ECU would be if you were putting the larger injectors in. Another brain fart...

I'm about 15 min east of Peoria. I can usually meet half way as long as you're not too far (or delivery can be negotiated). I'd need a few days to get eveything pulled and ready to go.

And yes, the 2.0NT and Turbo blocks are the same save the compression and oil squirters... I'v actually seen a NT block modified to be exactly the same as a turbo. i just figured they did something different on the 1.8's. never had a chance to look at one that close yet! biggthumpup.gif

One problem i see that may be an issue would be a different flywheel for the 1.8 vs the 2.0 im not sure as i dont have any side by side comparison of the motors. Just one issue that you may want to check into and see. example 7 bolt for your 2.0, not sure what it would be on a 1.8.

From my understanding you have a 2.0 non turbo auto that your converting to a 5sp rather than mess with another auto trans right? in that case you wont have to change ecu's, just everything that was on the link mitsu 90 gave. You may want to read through that before you decide to do it, cause there is alot of work involved in it, clutch pedal, lines, shifter and linkage. I dont know if you need to change electrical connectors or not, i believe the only one on a manual is for the backup lights.

if I do this swap on my auto it will be going to koumotorsports to have the job done by people that know what they are doing. if you want this done I would get ahold of them and see what all is involved.

I think as long as you take your time and read up on it before you start, it's not really that difficult. Most parts should just bolt right up, very little fabrication.

90gsx - you're right, the flywheel and clutch would be different... these would have to come from a matching car.

yeah ecu's dont need to be changed because i am not changing engines or injectors. i have the 2.0L 7 bolt non turbo. i'll do the swap myself. i've taken the automatic out of it several times... its nothing that has to be running right away (car hasnt been driven in over a year), but i would like to drive the car to work and whatnot instead of my ranger...17 - 18 mpg is not what i need right now...
