So to block off the egr, I can just make a plate to go between the egr and the mounting flange and disconnect the vacum lines?

I know that egr is there for mid range knock control...Any drivability or milage issues with doing this?

I haven't had any driveability problems with mine and I drove it for about a month straight in some of the coldest weather (and warmest of the fall) and didn't have any driveability issues. Mileage? My guess is you may actually pick up some gas mileage. It was my assumption that the EGR just helped with emissions regulations. Dumping unburnt fuel and exhaust gases back into cylinder 4 to keep the exhaust cleaner for the environment. I hadn't even thought about "knock control" but I suppose to an extent it's possible. I just can't appreciate the hot exhaust gases entering the intake tract I'm trying to keep cool.

My understanding is the EGR is there for emissions and slightly more fuel economy. I've never heard of it helping with knock. It's hard for me to imagine recirculating hot dirty exhaust into the intake would help eliminate knock when we are trying to cool that air as much as possible to eliminate knock. But maybe the unburnt fuel aids in knock prevention...I guess its possible.

Anyway, I've never had any problems running without an EGR. You don't have to worry about bolting the EGR back up. You just remove it completely and replace it with a plate to block off the two holes that the valve is normally over.

As I save for new parts, I decided to strip all the crusty parts and clean and paint them. I hate working with dirty, greasy parts!

Whatever came off, I painted gloss black. Engine compartment might look like a black hole now.

Nice! You get the Goat's Hoof of Approval on that! I feel the same way about nasty looking parts, and that's why I have to take so much freakin time getting this car apart, cleaned, and then back together.

Keep the faith. biggthumpup.gif

Finally got around to ordering my parts!! Should be in next week. My wallet is ALOT lighter today, who would of thought rebuilding a 4 banger is so much more than a small block Chevy.

Still looking for a decently price lower timing cover, I'd rather not spend another $80 on a new one.

Added a balance shaft eliminator kit to the mix, starting on that tonight!

Also going to doing the Windo-weld trick to the stock mounts to stiffen them up a little.
