How far have you guys pushed your stock turbo (EVO or DSM)?

Just yesterday I took my car out and took it for a drive to see how well it was running. I never got above 3/4 throttle and never went balls out. Even with the new 2.5in IC setup, spool is amazingly fast for the little 14B. I hadn't had a chance to bolt up the new exhaust since I ran out of sawzall blades (I have to cut off the old downpipe bracket) so it was on the car, just not bolted up. First gear yielded 10psi around 3500rpm, Second came quick with 15psi around 4000, and Third.... Third was too fast to count. Third came with 23psi around 4500 rpm by total accident. At that same moment I went over a small hill and heard a CLUNK! I thought for sure it was the sound of a turbo inhaling itself. Limped it back home being very careful, I pull it into the garage and take a look. Thank God! the clunk sound was confirmed by the same flat spot in my downpipe. Just by chance I had gone over the hill at the same time I hit the 23lbs and heard the downpipe scrape the ground. Downpipe and turbo are fine and I should be out driving it today, Woohoo! Now it's time to get that manual boost controller fixed.

Sounds like a plan. Last year my car was building 18lbs of boost on the stock IC, stock lower IC pipe, and stock boost controller. Don't ask me how, but for some reason it liked 18lbs on the stock setup. 18lbs should be a substantial amount with this setup though. A new turbo is in the works for this summer.

I'm curious to see what boost I'll be able to produce with this front mount. 18 would be cool, but if that's the top, I'll definitely be looking for a bigger turbo soon. Perhaps something in a fashionable 35 waist?

^^^Exactly, what cruise? I might, provided it doesn't throw a temper tantrum.

EDIT: To add to the above post, I took the car out again just now and it seems that even with the boost source connected directly to the wastegate it still wants to make 11psi at WOT (which I believe the stock wastegate is supposed to open at 5psi).

I'm not terribly concerned with that though. It's more that the BOV doesn't sound like it's opening long enough. Asiankid had some shaft play problems with his 16G with this same BOV so I'm not so sure that it may have been the source of his problems. I'm thinking of cutting the internal spring to reduce the tension on the cylinder so that it allows the valve to open easier.

I officially hate this F#ing car!!!!! Currently, bits of custom driveshaft and transfer case are scattered across the backroads of central Illinois. Why? I don't know. Did a couple WOT pulls just to make sure she's running up to par. No knock evident save for one or two counts at low throttle. First pulls hard spiking boost at 18psi!!! just on the wastegate actuator. Second pulls again and halfway through all the sudden there's this loud band. Not like a shotgun blast, more like a supersonic jet breaking the sound barrier. I look behind me only to see chunks of flying debris and a blue plume of smoke. I figured the worst. I listened and watched in the rear view waiting to see pistons jumping around on the pavement. No........no pistons..... just chunks of metal. Wait!! the engine is still running!!! YES! As I coasted the mile home I thought about what I had to do. As soon as I came to a stop in the driveway I was desperate to see the carnage. I looked under the car only to see the new custom driveshaft completely missing and the back half bouncing around on the ground. The back half of the transfer case is completely missing as well. GONE.... Hasta Lavista baby. I'm tired of messing with this pile of crap. I'm tempted to send it to the crusher. I hate my car.

Mind you this is a brand new (non-leaking) transfer case and a new custom driveshaft that had the yoke filled with silicone and the donuts repaired. I have no idea what made either of them fail.

I wonder if the driveshaft was out of balance.... might explain it grenading the transfercase like that.

Maybe the xfer case failed, dropped the driveshaft, and the shaft pole vaulted into the ground causing it to shatter. unsure.gif

Don't let it take over! Fix it and get it back rolling!

Did you keep the original driveshaft? Throw it back in with the transfer case from Spy or Bud and have at it again.

Might want to invest in a driveshaft hoop.

Truly sorry to hear about the t-case grenading like that, dude.

You stated earlier about boosting at 18psi on just the WG. I would be VERY leary about that, too. It's a 10 lb spring. If it's opening at 18, then something's up with that. Also, you were saying something about the BOV. Change those both while you're doing your rear end repair (shut up).

Good luck, dude. You've come this far. Don't stop now.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I picked up the driveshaft and transfer case from Dan. It should be back on the road this week sometime and ready for sale.

JBone, I believe it is opening at 10psi because it jumps to 10 immediately and spikes to 18 quickly. It was doing this on the old setup as well with the stock boost controller. 18psi is fine because it's got plenty of fuel for it and it's not over-extending the turbocharger. Not only that but it's not knocking at all.

What are you going to get if you sell it? Another 1g, or a 2g, or non DSM?

He's selling out of fear of the Goat. Period. In fact, he was simply thinking about the Goat when he was driving, and the car self-destructed from pure terror. Go ahead and run along, Brett. I understand. wink.gif

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, and I'm glad Dan was able to help you out. Let us know if there's anything else you need.
