I agree with a lot of your complaints, Miami. I've been involved with vacuum-forming plastics, carbon fiber laminations, reproduction moldings and all that for several years at one of my former jobs, and I've always been inclined to make molds of fenders and such and try some fiberglass reproductions. I'm familiar with all the products necessary and the vendors that sell them. Once established, it would be a simple process, and I don't get why more shops/vendors aren't going that route. It seems like hoods and side skirts are where the road ends for them.
I've already made a two guage pod that sits in leiu of the left hand dash speaker cover. I'm very happy with it, though it is a little heavier than ideal. Marcus and Spy have both seen it, and they are encouraging me to make more of the same or different setups. My other concept in the works is a fiberglass center console. I figure every last bit of weight lost is an effort in the right direction. -------------------- QUOTE (gsxracer80 @ Oct 31 2006, 12:41 AM)

Thanks for all the compliments. I've been trying to find a way to make these affordably and light enough for full-scale manufacturing, and I think I'm pretty close. Once done, I'll surely give the club a special price.
Marcus was wanting something similar but more or less mounted to the front of the dash clip on either side of the steering wheel. I think I can pull that off, but I"ll need some R&D first. A spare junk dash would be helpful. -------------------- QUOTE (gsxracer80 @ Oct 31 2006, 12:41 AM)

Very nice!! I like that a lot better than the A-pillar versions. Maybe we can work a trade for one of my aluminum headlight ducts...
Top of the steering column would be an nice option in addition to Marcus's suggestions. -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

Actually if anone has some spare front fenders in decent shape, I'd like to see if I can't start fabbing some out of fiberglass. Just need a mold, and the rest is pretty straight forward.
Who in the group would be interested in buying a set of glass front fenders? Things like air scoops and the like would be easily accomplished if desired. I can also make a mold for a glass center console if any would be interested in shedding some weight there. Just let me know. Kris, you may have started something good here. -------------------- QUOTE (gsxracer80 @ Oct 31 2006, 12:41 AM)

I have some fenders in the shed....let me see how they look. Would making the mold destroy them?

Not at all. They should be perfectly fine if I do my part right. If they're dented at all, I'll have to fix that, but from the INSIDE of the fender, so the outer surface may look a little wierd. The mold needs to be the inner surface so I can vacuum-pull the glass on top of it with no problems.

Wow thats deffinately some nice Glass work. Id be interested in the Pods too when your ready. When you say console how much of the console are you talking about including or excluding the place for the radio. because it would be sweet to integrate an opening for an AFC and guages in stock radio location.

Mods, is there a chance to move some of this into a new thread so I haven't totally hijacked Kris's thread? There's more to his theory than fiberglass fenders.

I would get a set of fiberglass fenders from you. it sounds like a good idea. let me know how much you would charge for a pair, because i need to shed some weight, how much would you sell the center console for. pm me or something

I'll have no clue how much they cost to manufacture until I actually .... well, manufacture them. Once the R&D is done, I'll let everyone know.
