Well I learned a few things this week on leak patrol.
1) Silicone the thermostat housing gaskets. No matter how clean you get the surfaces and the bolts properly torqued. Otherwise they will piss all over you clean engine! 2) Do NOT use thread sealant on banjo bolt thread with crush washers! The sealant creates a leak path between the washer the the head and will again piss all over your clean engine!! Time to start saving for a MAF translator and some bigger injectors. Hopefully I get the cash before the SCDC day. -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

Next upgrade is on the way, I got a translator coming (Thanks Turbocar!) Since SCDC is coming up soon, I'm going to run it in a draw-through config so I don't have to worry about redoing the UICP.
So I think for now, I'm going to connect the GM Maf to the Kriss144 intake and get a K&N to fit the intake side of the MAF. I'll fab up a bracket to hold the aircleaner up off the fender or maybe build a cold air box if I have time. -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

Does anybody know if a 3" K&N cone filter will stretch over the 3 3/16" GM MAF opening???
I know they sell a 3 1/4" filter...but I'm want to avoid having to buy another filter later when I change to a blow through setup. -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

I got a 3" plubing fitting to fit over a 2g mas... and it's a lot stiffer material. my guess is that it can be done.

Well I got a 3" silicone coupler from Autozone and a used 3" air cleaner (thanks Darryl) and mocked up the new intake. Both slipped over the MAF with no problem.
Air mock up Just have make mounting bracket to mount the translator and I'll hopefully have it running Sunday. Has anyone routed a translator back into the glove box? I can find an extension cable for the GM maf side, but can't find a cable to run between the stock maf plug and the translator. Maybe this doesn't exist. I was hoping to not have to cut the stock harness. -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

why stop at the glove box? go to the center console and you have tuning capabilities at your finger tips!!
Buy multi cable for a stereo. I know Sound of Peoria (aka Sound of My Nuts) carries these cables. It's a 1/2" sheathed cable that has 13 or 14 wires in it. It's used to relocate stock stereos or to amplify 4 car speakers without much intrusion into the doors. They would typically hook up to an amp in the rear and run the wires to the radio location. From there they hooked up to the factory wires. It's cheaper than re-running the wires. Anyways, I think it sells for no more than $1/ foot. I believe this was used in the spy rocket with not problems -------------------- -The original (member) 007. Stop looking at me Spy!!

Got the Maf and translator in and running.
Few Questions: 1) Can Idle/Mid/WOT fuel adjustments be made with the car running? Only the base setting needs to be set with the ignition off-correct? 2) Does the orientation of the MAF make a differance? I've read conflicting opinions. 3) How do you match the Idle/Mid/WOT to the trim %? My first run out in the country gave me a low fuel trim of 137...would I richen the Idle dial to 7 (35%)??? More questions to come... EDIT*** In an effort to drop my duty cycle below 100% at WOT, I threw on a auto FPR that bumped the bas FP to 44psi and went out for another log. My trims came out: Low 139% Mid 95% Hi 93 I need to reset the idle since it's around 950-1000. But can a GM MAF flow that much air that it's running so lean?? On the stock MAF, the car ran 85-90 trim. -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

1) All can be adjusted when the car is running, even the base.
2) I don't know for sure, but there is an arrow on the maf to show you which way the air should flow through it. 3) Since the WOT knob only makes corrections at WOT, this does not affect your trims at all, because the ECU goes into an open loop mode and does not use dynamic corrections such as the fuel trims or O2 trims. Obviously the base knob will affect all trims. The MID knob will affect your mid and high trims. And the idle knob will affect your low trims. |

2) I got the airflow direction right. I was more concerned about the orientation of the divider inside the MAF. I've read it must be vertical, Horizontal etc. It seems to be fine the way I have it, I was just looking for anybody issues on this board.
3) I was just looking for a correlation between the fuel trim percentage and how much adjustment (clicks on the translator). IE, if the fuel trim is 37% lean, how many clicks on the translator will get you ballpark (toward 100). -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

Thanks Nate, guess I was looking for the easy way out
Yes JBone, I WILL be eventually running the translator to the drivers seat! After resetting the idle to 750-800 and rehooking up my idle switch, I went out a tuned some more today. Leaned out the base setting to 460 injectors setting. Got the trims: Hi 99 Mid 100 Lo 81 One click on the idle knob either drives the lo trim to either 81 or 137?!?!? I can watch the car idle and just drive the trim down or up depending on the setting. Any ideas here? -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

Alright, I seem to have a better handle on the translator. Car's running decent around town and seems to be getting decent gas milage.
So, of course I'm thinking of the next upgrade: Injectors! Any size recommendation for my setup? I was thinking 550 to 600's. I figured everything over 600's would be kind of overkill since 600's will support over 400hp. I'm looking for 2 benefits here, keep the injector duties cycles down and help keep me out of fuel cut (counting of the translator tricking the ecm) while trying to run 20+ psi of boost...or as much as my 14b will put out. -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???

I don't think the translator have a correction setting for that!

I guess it's time for an update:
Got some Lucas 550's from FIC a couple of weeks ago. Excellant service and quick shipping. Car is running pretty good, fuel cut is gone after the adjustments on the MAFT. Idle trims are back to being crappy slowly cycling rich to lean. Running 15-16psi on 93 oct, the knock is <4 when the weather temps are reasonable. So of course can't leave anything alone! A good deal was struck and the next modification is in processes of being purchased, it seems I can't say no to Turbocar! I'll post up pictures when it's installed... -------------------- 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD "The Black Golfball" How fast can a 14B go???
