Keep it safe out there fellas. I was hit by a Mustang from behind this morning just east of Bloomington. I was on my 19 pound bike so obviously I didn't come out on the winning end of things. I was going about 22 and he had to be going over 60. You could say that I was incredibly lucky because I have no broken bones. I just have a gash on my left elbow, a swollen right ankle, and a severely sore and swollen butt. I'm not sure if the butt is from hitting the car or from hitting the ground. I have major butt road rash too. I'll spare you the pictures of that but here are a couple of shots of my poor bike. Note the frame is broken in two places in the rear triangle. The rear wheel is mangled.

Did the Mustang come up on you on a two-lane or was it an intersection accident? Any way I vision it is pretty damn scary! Glad to hear that the bodily damage wasn't any worse.

QUOTE Did the Mustang come up on you on a two-lane or was it an intersection accident? It was on a little two-lane country road. He came up from behind me. I was on the very edge of the road. That's probably what saved me. I think it was more of a glancing blow. The only other thing that I could have done is ditch it but I'm not sure I even had time for that. He was moving right along. I didn't see the car after I was hit but while I was lying in the ditch waiting for the ambulance I heard the guy that called 911 say that the damage on the Mustang was the right corner marker and the right mirror. I also heard that the sherrif said that there was some bumper damage too so I'm not sure how glancing it was. -------------------- 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX - all options except AT & leather *sold*

You are lucky to still be here fter a hit like that. I'm glag you made it. That's exactly why I don't ride bikes on the highway. Because of crazy bastards out there that can't drive or pay attention.

This wasn't an interstate...or highway. It was just a two lane country road. There are crazy, bad drivers everywhere.
But, yeah, I avoid highways too. I try to get to the country roads as soon as possible. The problem is that I live on what used to be the edge of Bloomington. The edge is moving further away from us all the time. The road where I was hit will probably be getting upgraded to a five lane road after the 400 house subdivision that they have advertised starts being built. -------------------- 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX - all options except AT & leather *sold*

No where was the interstate mentioned and I use the term 'highway' loosley where any car is legally allowed to run at 55mph like an old country road. From now on bull shit like this may be deleted without warning for this very reason. Symantics are for politicians and those with far too much time on their hands. I am/have niether and I can read the meaning of others posts fine without perfect grammar. Rant off. -------------------- In Loving memory of David T Crebo

for reference: http://www.state.il.us/kids/isp/bikes/law/default.htm
and more to the point, from http://www.biketraffic.org/content2.php?id=50_0_6_0 QUOTE Any person operating a bicycle or motorized pedal cycle upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except under the following situations: 1. When overtaking and passing another bicycle, motorized pedal cycle or vehicle proceeding in the same direction; or 2. When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway; or 3. When reasonably necessary to avoid conditions including, but not limited to, fixed or moving objects, parked or moving vehicles, bicycles, motorized pedal cycles, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards, or substandard width lanes that make it unsafe to continue along the right-hand curb or edge. For purposes of this subsection, a "substandard width lane" means a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle or motorized pedal cycle and a vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane. (

There is a large sign about no umpowered bicycles or powered bicycles on the interstate on the entrance ramps......and no pedestrians.... Nothing under 150cc or self powered is allowed on our fine interstate system Atleast they have those signs here in Urbana(unless they have been taken down), dunno about Peoria, maybe they let Darwin handle that over there --------------------

That is true and was my mistake, read highway, mind read that and thought interstate highway. Also, atleast here in town, 'supposed' to be a state law of some sort but who knows if thats true, if you get hit on your bicycle during nighttime hours(ie when its dark) and you do not have a rear facing red light, and a front facing white light, you are deemed to be automatically atleast 50% at fault for the accident. This comes from my old roommate getting hit by a car at night with no lights, reflectors do not count. He ended up having to eat the cost of his bike his ER tip was paid for by the driver. --------------------
