OK. Heres the deal. I picked up Neils 91 TSI AWD last nite. Well I love the car. Its got a few things to work out, but I got it for a great deal and its a pretty quick car. Anyways, on cold starts it idles at about 2K RPM's. Does anybody know what this would be caused by? ITs really annoying and the car is loud enough as it is. The last thing I need is to wake the whole neighborhood up at 6:30 in the morning when I go to work because of a high idling car. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Mine does something similar Mark. I've chaulked it up to the hacked MAS that's in it. Does it slow to normal once it warms up?

Yeah, but I went out and started it again today and I noticed it was more like its idling at 2500 rpm's when its really cold. After about a minute it idels fine (~800). Its not horrible, but its annoying early in the morning to say the least. Also, I seem to be leaking oil from the turbo oil sending line. Does anybody know how hard this is to replace? Its leaking near where it meets near the oil filter. Wher I get some time I'm gonna get underneath of there and see iff maybe the high pressure hoses arent maybe in need of replacing. I noticed that alot of the other hoses underneath are looking a bit old. Other than these two small problems she runs beautifuly and its quick as hell and extremely fun to drive in comparison to my 2nd gen. Oh yeah, the gas gauge is busted too, but thats no biggie.

Thanks Todd. I already looked through this. It doesnt seem to surge though. It just idles really high until it warms up.

Is the MAS modified on that at all? That would explain some of that high idle I think. Let me know if you find a fix for it.

If you want a new gauge cluster with a working fuel gauge, let me know. I've got at least two.

As far as I know the only mod to the MAS is that he removed the lower honeycombs.

Well, im pretty sure that the gas gauge doesnt work because of the float in the tank. It works till it gets down to anywhere between 1\4 and 1\2 empty, so im assuming there is something wrong with the float arm. I might take one of them from you though, just in case. Do you have a working fog light switch? I know that is a common problem on 1st gens.
