i was driving down washinton blacktop on saturday and my gears have been getting crappier and i figured its was the push rod in the mastercylinder going out. but my tranny was becoming unbolted from the block. how the hell does that happen.

Maybe it wasn't tightened down sufficiently to begin with. Take them out, put a small amount of loctite on the threads and retorque. Then you can be sure they won't back out.
