Thanks to Spy, Jbone and Mustang Steve who accompanied me on the midnight trip to the strip!
It was packed with a lot of real street cars! Very cool. I only seen a few people that I knew, but there were all kinds of vehicles. They ranged anywhere from old farm trucks and Hundai Elantras to 11 second muscle cars pumping nitrous through 8 and 9" wide DOT tires! Everything in between including many imports and a lot of respect going around all over. The weather in the wee hours was still warm and muggy, but it was better than day time temps. I was hoping to make a 12.9X pass on my street set-up with pump gas and 18psi on my $300 junk yard motor, then crank the boost with 112 octane and see what happens! Well things started out well for me, but as usual the law of DSM breakage was enforced. First run: On pump gas against an Classic Nova on NOS. I got my a$$ handed to me but ran a 13.015 @ 104MPH. I was very happy with that knowing I could eek out another .016 of a second. So I decided to put in the 112 and crank it up. Second run was against a newer Mustang GT with a Cam gear-drive or something that whined like it. The launch was terrible and the car seemed to be rejecting the new mixture resulting is a 13.57 @ 104. The funny thing was I still killed the Stanger by a good 4-5 cars. After slowing down to pick up my time slip I could tell that I smoked a cylinder. At this point the lines were 20-30 minutes long and it was only 1:30AM. We also had a few friends with trailers. So following my normal give-it-all-you-can philosophy, I checked for easy fixes tuned things a little bit and headed back to the track to see if I could finally blow this junk yard motor up. Third run: Was against a forth gen LT1 firbird. My car sounded like a VW but was still pumping hard enough to clean the four drive wheels off. As we went down the track, the state of my engine became very obvious and I was having to shift at 6K to keep the power from dropping off too much. While running only 3 cylinders and general performance definitely lacking, I still got to smoke (literally filling my lane) the poor LT1 who was a few cars behind. In an amazing testamtent to the 4G63's tenacity, the time slip read a 13.87 @ 98MPH! So all in all I had a great time and was able to drive my 3 cylinder all the way back home with no problems. A compression test today revealed 135-135-119-87 where 160 is spec and 120 the service limit. I'll be getting another engine ready very soon. -------------------- In Loving memory of David T Crebo
