 Morning Glare, and its negative affects on vision |

I feel compelled to warn everyone that apparently it is unsafe to drive East on a bright and sunny morning and conversely drive West on a bright and sunny late afternoon.
My wife, Andrea was in a car accident on Tuesday, even though she wasn't even in her car. She was parked in front of the babysitters house getting ready to unbuckle Kyle from his seat and take him to the babysitter. She was bending over in between the door and the car by Kyle's baby seat when a silver 2004 Ford Mustang came along and hit the edge of the door. The door proceeded to swing in and hit Andrea with some serious force in the hip and upper thigh area. According to the driver there was a "glare" in her windshied and she didn't see Andrea or the door. Thanfully, Kyle was still safe in his baby seat when all this happened. Andrea, who was in a lot of pain and having difficulty walking was taken via ambulance to St. Francis hospital ER. She had X-rays taken of her neck, right hip and right leg. Fortunately, they all came back negative for broken or fractured bones. She is back home now taking it easy. She has a large contusion on her upper thigh though and is in a good deal of pain even with the pain killers. She can walk and the doctor expects her to make a full recovery within a week or two. I am very thankful that this wasn't any worse. I shudder to think what could have happened had she been holding Kyle or not bent over with her upper body inside the car. Obviously this is one of those freak accidents where she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I think there is a bit of a moral to this story. If its bright out, and you have a glare on your windshield that is imparing your vision of the road, clean your windshield and/or wear a pair of sunglasses. You can get windshield wash solution and sunglasses at Walmart for under $10. My most sincere thanks go out to the Washington paramedics and the competant doctors and nurses in the St. Francis ER. |

Wow...Sorry to here of Andrea's misfortune Nate! It sounds like her and Kyle were very lucky considering the circumstances though.
I've often been glad that I don't drive East in the morning's which would mean you get it on the way home in the evening as well. Glare on the windshield is a real problem even when everything is clean. I'm actually suprised you don't hear of more incidents caused by it. I've almost always be able to drive North and South to to work for the most part. So I usually only get one eye burnt from the sun glare.

I hope she feels better real soon. Yep, real scary.
And glare ain't no excuse - just like rain - slow the hell down and do what you have to do to see. Make sure the insurance company takes a good chunk out of the driver including Andrea's time off work, pain, and suffering. She's lucky to still have legs. -------------------- ... she likes bein' forced ...

Thanks for all the words of encouragement guys. Andrea is doing better, but she is still in plenty of pain and not super comfortable walking. Andrea is receiving lost wages and we will be contacting the insurance company for pain and suffering reparation (with an attorney if necessary).

Thanks Haunter. Its surprisingly tough to tug a wiggly 21 lb kid out of a car seat from the opposite side of the car from where the car seat is located.
From now on she will be waiting until the babysitters driveway is free so she can park there while unloading the kid. |

Prunes mostly. Dunno why, but the kid loves 'em. I personally wish he would have chosen something less laxative as a favorite food.
 He's definitely a big boy. Not overly chunky, just tall with some meat on him. |

Don't complain, keeping him eating prunes. My son's intestines got backed up and had to keep him on laxitive for a year.

ehh... mine move around too much and never eat anymore... 4 and almost 6 and both about 40lbs.

Wow, glad she's doing as well as she is and that it wasn't any worse. I think you're remarkably calm about this man, I can imagine that you'd be steaming like a madman.

Oh I definitely wasn't calm when it happened. I've had some time to calm down though. We're still gonna make sure we get what's coming to us. Andrea's still really sore and there is more than likely going to be some emotional issues to work through. One thing this experience has taught me is women deal with stuff like this a lot different than guys do.

21 lbs, how old? my almost 3 year old niece is 40 lbs! shes as big as my twin and I were when we started gradeschool --------------------

He'll be 8 months in 6 more days. They say babies' growth usually slows down after 6 months. He hasn't slowed yet...

If she took anything near to the shot that I did over the summer when I got hit by a car on my bicycle, don't expect it to heal anytime soon. I've still got nerve damage that I'm hoping will clear up in another year or two. I'm also still waiting on the settlement offer from the insurance company.
