Alright well I Had a bad oil leak coming from somewhere on the front case. This is my daily (only) driver so I had been putting it off for a while. I was driving around town last night and the oil pressure light came on (gauge doesn’t work). So I went to Wal-Mart and bought some oil and put 2 quarts in and decided I would put in some oil additive to try and thicken it up slightly so the oil wouldn’t leak as bad. BAD IDEA!!! I started it up and was on my way down the interstate when I started hearing a clicking noise coming from the engine. I got maybe 3 miles then pulled off and into a parking lot. When I slowed down I noticed that the clicking had turned into more of a thumping sound that was shaking my foot through the clutch pedal. I accelerated and it started making a louder thumping noise and would not pick up at all. With the pedal to the floor I got up to maybe 15mph after a good min. I pulled over and let it run for a second and it just got louder and then started shaking bad and making weird noises so I got nervous and shut it down before it shut itself down. I didn’t really get the chance to check to much to find where the noise was coming from but I thought maybe lifters or a rod from the noise? The timing is fine and it didn’t skip any teeth. I got it towed back today and am in the process of tearing it apart to fix the oil leak and find out what the problem was. Anybody know what this may be. I know I wasn’t thinking when I added the oil treatment and that’s why I think it may be the lifters, but I’ve never had a problem with them before so I don’t know what to look for. It was fine before I added the oil. I’m going nuts trying to diagnosing this damn car. Anyone have an idea what’s up?

I posted this question on Dsmtalk the other day but nobody has answered me. Maybe someone around here knows what it may be?

What is the year/make/trim of your car?? It sounds like a bad crank bearing to me, but it could be a number of things. I think youde have to be more specific on what kind of thumping noise and where its coming from. Good luck!

Hmmm...a loud thumping noise that you can feel through your foot on the gas pedal... That sounds like the short oil starvation picked-up by the oil pressure warning light light, may have greatly reduced the life of one of the rod bearings. I'm sorry to say this, but something that shakes the whole engine will not come from a lifter.
You have to take the oil pan off to get the front oil pump cover off any way. So check to see if any of the connecting rods are loose on the crank. Good Luck! -------------------- In Loving memory of David T Crebo

its a 92 talon tsi awd 5 speed. It was more like a thumping sound that happend about 2 times a second and when i pushed in the clutch it was shaking bad. I always had it oiled real good And never had a big leak, i had a small leak that caused my timing belt to skip a month ago and i took it up to slopny and got eveyrthing fixed but after about 2 weeks it started eating oil and by the other day i was adding a quart every 200 miles. Turned out to be the oil filter housing was messed up. i got most of the engine disassembled but while trying to remove a bolt off of the front case i put to much pressure on it, bolt broke and i slipped and almost sliced my index finger off. still dont know what the hell i hit but it must have been pretty sharp

It did sound kind of like the bearing, it started off quiet then got louder and before i shut it down the engine was shaking bad and the idle was dropping fast to?

I hate to say it, but it sounds exactly like what happend to Jim. He spun a rod baring and he had the same symptoms. I would do what Marcus said and ck to see if that is waht the problem is. Good luck and let us know of the progress.

Well I’ve decided to just go ahead and pull the engine out as I’ve been wanting to add a set of 2g pistons and clean the engine up a bit. (this thing has an inch thick coating of oil on the drive belt side). I’m still pretty sure its the bearing but I haven’t dropped the oil pan because of the rain today. So while its out I’m just going to have it rebuilt. I've been looking around for a rebuild kit and was wondering if anybody had any recommendations on what would be a good deal? So far I’ve looked at Machv rebuild kits and flatlander racing kit as well. Both are TopLine. I would like to get a 6 bolt kit with 95 pistons if anyone would allow the substitution. http://www.importperformanceparts.net/ Or if anyone knows of a place to pick up a nice rebuilt short block (locally). Damn I’ve already put about 2500 into this car in the last two months and I’m still stock! Oh well no point in buying another car and starting the process all over again

DO NOT GET THE TOPLINE KIT!!!!!!!!!!
I got one for my car and blew the damn head gasket in 500 easy miles. Josh at Slopony got clevite bearings and spun one in less than 200 miles. Get all Mitsu bearings, gaskets, etc... You will thank yourself later. -------------------- The fastest car I own is a minivan....

Super16g has a set of used 2G pistons for sale. Jump on that!
BTW - Clevite bearings were not the cause of Josh's spun bearings. This happend because one of us puthe the bearings in 180 degrees from correct. This cut down the amount of oil available to the crank and hence...spun bearing. Rather embarasing, but it will NOT happen again if I have anything to do with it. At the same time I'm saying this, I am buying Mitsu bearings for my rebuild...better safe than sorry. -------------------- In Loving memory of David T Crebo

Anyone know where i can pick up a good set? Im on a very limited budget but i do want to get it done right the first time. Even if i got the top line set i would be going with a mitsubishi metal head gasket. Also i would probably have kalinas assemble the bottom end so i dont screw something up and have to pull it back out. I need to find a cheap and FAST machine shop. Last time i had my head in at mullivans? they had the head for a good two weeks leaving me to the mercy of public transportation

Yeah I was wondering the same, is it possible that they have a kit put together (concielli) for rebuilds
Also. I got my gasket kit from Napa and they've always had good parts, do you think they stock a rebuild quit of considerable quality? -------------------- 1990 Nissan 300ZX T
