After two months of being sidelined, the GSX is back on the streets. I was chasing down a persistent oil leak and in the process of fixing that, created huge problems with the car. But, after two head swaps and no small amount of frustration, frozen fingers, and four letter words, it runs.
For all the hassle that I've been through for the last two months, I can honestly say it was all worth it the first time I hit the gas and let it go in 2nd gear. This car is scary fast and though it always seems like there's a million things to do, it's all about enjoying it while it lasts. Guys, if your DSM runs, count yourself lucky and enjoy every moment of it. If it doesn't, then get that sumbitch fixed and start having fun with the car again. Finally, I can park that POS evo and drive the good car. -------------------- my cars breath smells like car food

Congrats buddy! What all did you have to do to overcome your problems? New oil squirters, and another head or did you go with shorter squirter plugs? Any other goodies get added?

QUOTE (akamiami @ Dec 18 2003, 09:29 AM) Guys, if your DSM runs, count yourself lucky and enjoy every moment of it. Yeah. My DSM has been running for about 3 or 4 months straight now. I think that is a record for me. I was just thinking the other night, that the reason you weren't seeing oil squirting out of the lifters while cranking was probably just because the oil was cold. Josh's engine was hot when we did that little test. Don't know why I didn't think of this before... |

QUOTE (awd4kicks @ Dec 18 2003, 04:25 PM) What all did you have to do to overcome your problems? Thanks. The turbo starts hitting around 3K. Nice. The problems with the GSX were all my fault. It seems that I installed the HKS 272 cams improperly somehow and spun the cam in the head. Then the replacement head did the same thing on the exhaust cam. At that time, I thought I had a lubrication problem, but this was not the case, I think now that the replacement head was bad to begin with. I also thought that I had blocked off the oil to the head when I replaced the oil squirters with bolts. This was not the case as the oil squiter taps are drilled at an offset to the main journal in the block. BTW, the pefect blockoff bolts for these squirters are AT flexplate to crank bolts. -------------------- my cars breath smells like car food

Oh and BTW... While we are the subject of non-running DSMs.
Remember that my bearings went to Hell after only 300 miles of break-in running. Upon inspection we found that the cylinder walls, pistons, rings, crank journals and bearings were all marred by oil contaminated with metalic debri. I also found that the balance shaft eleiminator stub I had installed was galleded and after seeing that I remember that it's bearing finish wasn't perfect when I recieved it. I'm now leaning toward that as my core problem along with my turned 10 under Mitsubishi crank. So I'm now going to use another crank. I may end up using another block and bore it out .020 instead of re-boring mine and having to buy another set of forged pistons. This is getting expensive!!! Whatch out for the bearing surface on any $45 balance shaft removal stub shaft that you buy! -------------------- In Loving memory of David T Crebo

Oh, that sucks buddy. Sorry to hear about all the problems. My worst fear is something like that happening and requiring yet another total rebuilt.

Have you noticed more oil pressure with the squirters blocked off? My oil pressure seems to be low lately and I'm starting to wonder if I may have knocked one or more of the squirters loose when I wrecked the black car. That or it may just be a bad connection on the pressure sender. Guess I'll be using a magnet next time I change my oil. See if I can't find a squirter.

Yeah, I've got great oil pressure, a little bit more, but not much more than before. Hard to give exacts when going off the crappy sender.
The combination of no balance shafts, brand new pump, and blocked off squirters has me a little worried that my oil pressure may be too high. -------------------- my cars breath smells like car food

Kris,
talking about not running DSMs, even though I have that thani problem I decided to start mine up to let it run for a bit. when I did I saw that I had a large amount of oil sprayed out on to the snow from my exhaust, so it looks like the engine is looking at a rebuild so I think I am going to try to pick up that 6 bolt you have instead of working with this 7 bolt, you still have it, right??? -------------------- You CAN sleep in your car, but your CAN NOT race your house!!!
