the white smoke was what i though originally. my turbo is bad. it smokes terribly all the time now. here are my possible solutions:
1.) drive it w/ the bad turbo till it finally dies completely and literally smoke everyone around me on the road.
2.) get my turbo rebuilt and spent another who knows how much on that.
3.) marcus at slo pny said it would be cheaper to get a 16g. my question on this is how much is a good used/ new 16g and what will i have to accomodate the bigger turbo. i already have a 255 fuel pump, but what about a new intercooler and pipes? injectors? fuel management?
4.) i have a place that i can get a garrett T3 ball bearing turbo new for around $250. how much different is this turbo as opposed to the 14b? what would i have to do to accomodate this one?
5.) i have sitting here a mitsubishi 12a turbocharger that is rebuilt and is originally from a starion. i understand that IF this would fit, it would be a loss in power, but could get me through till i have enough money to afford something else. does anyone know if the 12a will fit or not?

any and all advice is appreciated. thanks a lot.

i am basically interested in getting the smoke to stop and the car running properly, so huge performance is not a big factor at this time. and the fact that im totally broke. im looking for 'relatively' cheap solutions. nothing like huge turbo with new pistons and rings and so on. ok im done

you can get a EVO III big 16G from buscher racing for round $535
I believe that you will need bigger injectors, but other than that you already have the 255 pump, you should be good to go, the intercooler, pipes, and fuel management would be nice but I dont think that it would be nessessary......if anyone else has better info feel free to add on or correct me if I am wrong!!!!!

The cheapest solution, IMHO, is to find a decent used 14b from a credible source for ~100-150. Not the route I would go personally. I'd take the chance to upgrade and turn my broken part into a good thing.

But from what you're saying though about your circumstances, a good used 14B will be your best bet. I'd try to preserve the turbo a bit while you're looking by turning the boost down and trying to stay out of boost.

If you can get it rebuilt for close to the $150 then that will be a better bet budget wise as 100K mile turbos will go out eventually. If you need a loaner to rebuild and avoid downtime, you are welcome to 'borrow' one of my blown 14B's to have rebuilt and replace it with your broken one if you like.

Don't bother with the other turbos you mentioned, you'll spend more time and money trying to get them to fit than you would on a 16G (which you can run on your stock injectors and IC on low boost).

Definately time for a 16g. I guess the turbo just couldn't take the 20psi boost spikes!

With a 16g you can run everything else stock, as long as you keep the boost moderate. You already have an exhaust, and fuel pump. I'd do a re-wire on the fuel pump if you didn't do that when you put it in. You also need to get a manual boost controler of some type asap. You might be able to limp around on the smoking turbo for quite a while if funds are that limited. Talk to Darryl (awdnot2), he might even be willing to set up some sort of payment plan?

Do not put bigger injectors in without some sort of fuel management. The T3 would be nice, but you would probably have to spend another $1500 in supporting mods to get it to work correctly.

Ouch! That'll kill an ole 14b pretty quick.

Like everybody's saying if you can afford it go with the 16g. It's a great turbo. You'll thank yourself in the long run.

There's a thread on CII titled: Anything Off 90 Turbo Eclipse!! that might interest you, TSiwrx. Looks like he's parting it out. You could grab up that turbo.

it sounds as though the 16g is the best bet. if anyone knows where i can get one that would be great. what should i talk to awdnot2 about? the guy at high-rev motorsports said he will sell me a new big 16g for like $700. i certainly cannot afford that. is there a place i can get one cheap? otherwise i might just get a used 14b and get it rebuilt.

go to www.awdnot2.com or www.buschurracing.com. They've got small 16g's for like $500, or the big EVO III 16g for $535. biggthumpup.gif

The cost for a rebuilt 14b from my supplier is around $450. So personally I would find the extra bit of money to get a 16g in one form or another.

I've got a ported Big16G w/a larger (34mm) wastegate flapper I could let go for around $500. It's got about 4000 miles on it. I'll include the ported O2 housing, too. PM me if you're interested.

thats not a bad deal, I'd offer to give you my old 14b at a good price but it is still on the car, unless you want to wait untill I get a chance to unbolt it. is the turbo all you need???

its not real bad, but I wouldnt push it on the high boost levels, if you kept the boost levels down you could use it to get around a little better than you are now.
I dont know how much I want for it, make me an offer...

hey spy, what would a used turbo run for with not quite 100,000 miles

I would say to help preserve the turbo the longest, dont push it over 12-14lbs.

I am not sure when axactly I could have it off, what would you be willing to pay for it.
