I think my starter is going out. When the housing broke that first time, the tranny tilted enough to drag the starter into the flywheel and mangled it pretty good. I'm pretty sure the end bearing in it is pretty unhappy with that type of loading also.

Anybody ever have to change one of these out? Just wondering how long it might take/how hard it is. I know unbolting it is easy, just not sure how much of a PITA the wiring is.

I would imagine it would be a nice PITA. I've unbolted them changing clutches, but there is not enough room to remove it. Might have to take the whole intake off.

You are the first DSMer I've ever heard of having a starter go out.

Haha! I just had the starter go out on my AWD a couple days ago. The wiring is really easy. The main power bolts onto the positive terminal and a ground plugs into a female connector.

Its not so much the starter's fault that it doesn't work, most things wouldn't be too happy about getting ground down by the flywheel

Right now the starter only works if one bolt is used, allowing the starter to swing down closer to the flywheel. I assume the starter gear is chewed up since the flywheel looks decent.
