OK. Im totally stumped on removing the timing belt. I followed the VFAQ and got to the part where you use the special tool (modified battery tie down bolt) and compress the auto tensioneer pushrod (step 11 here) When I screw the tensioner tool in it seems to do nothing. I can get the allen wrench to go into the tensioner body but not the tensioner pushrod. I'm assuming that when I tighten the tensioner tool that it is supposed to have some sort of effect on the tensioner push rod? It doesnt really seem to have any at all. Does anybody have any suggestions for removing\installing a timing belt? Most of the head pull has gone super smooth except for this one step. Also, I have no balance shafts so im not concerned with removing the balance shaft bolts. Thanks again!

Are you removing the belt? If so, then just remove the tensioner bolts and take the tensioner out. You can compress it back in a vise and then put a pin or small nail in the hole to hold the rod down. Just don't forget to remove that once you put it back in. Hope this helps.

Joe Compress what back with a vice? HAHA! I think half the reason that I'm having a rough time with this is that I cant see inbetween the car and the timing belt assembly to follow along with the VFAQ's pictures very well. -------------------- 2003 Mustang GT

Mark, just unbolt the tensioner. The belt will almost fall off then. You use the vice to compress the tensioner before you put it back on the car (not WHILE it's on the car

I was just unclear on what the VFAQ said and Remeber Rob telling me something about a vice so I was confused. It also has been raining and the car is outside so when it rains I have to keep the hood closed and the car covered so I dont get water inside the motor. I'll unbolt that tensioner as soon as I get a ain free day. -------------------- 2003 Mustang GT

make sure you compress the tensioner slowly so as not to blow out the seals in that tensioner, if you want a mechanical tensioner Mitsu 77's shop makes them and im sure he could swing you a price. just find some kind of pin to stick in through the tesioner rod to keep it from readjusting out, it doesn't have to be a battery doohickey
