Well I've begun work on the new talon. I first pulled the oil pan to find if their claim of a broken rod was indeed true. What I found was worse. The rod was fine. The piston on #4 was in 8000000 pieces. The oil pan was full of piston. This didn't bother me.
What bothered me was when I pulled the turbo. The coolant lines were full of piston. When I started pulling water lines off the engine to pull it, piston pieces everywhere. This doesn't bother me other than the parts that I can't clean easily. I'm assuming the heater core is full of metal. The radiator is full of metal. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I was thinking about throwing in the other motor, but I don't want it full of metal pieces. In-line filters all over? I'm really not sure where to go with this. -------------------- GVR4 866/1000 = the perpetually broken car

I hate to say it, but it looks like you'll probably have to replace everything that has either coolant or oil run through it.

I guess its a good thing I was going to part the galant out anyway huh. I know the radiators are basicly the same and most of the stuff will work, so I shouldn't have to much of a problem replacing everything. I just really didn't want to tear into the dash.

Ok, with that issue resolved, on to the next. If I get a 2g tranny, which one do I get? There's 21-23 splines. Is this on the output side to the rear or what? I've never dealt with AWD parts before.

Depends on what year your car was made or if you want to be sure, drop the transfer case and count the teeth or "splines" on the output shaft. That will tell you how many your car has and you can get the respective transmission. BTW, screw the heater core!! Silly galant, heaters are for kids. The dash isn't all that much trouble and you'll be able to feel the weight savings if it makes you feel any better. See if you can take the radiator to a radiator shop (Ma's in Bloomington or something similar) usually they can get most things flushed out of radiators. In my opinion, you'll probably have to take everything that had coolant in it off and use the air compressor on it to blow the metal out.

Well the engine is now out of the car and I'm ready for the next phase... finding funding. I've made some decisions on what is going to happen pretty much forsure now.
1. The galant motor will survive in the Talon 2. A 2g tranny will be used to make this work with some sort of custom mounting procedure(I'll do some measuring tomorrow) 3. All of the extras stay in the car(A/C, Power steering, Heat) 4. Galant parts will be used to make up for ones that have to be thrown out. Becides the heater core, I think the others(radiator and lines) will work quite nicely. 5. The spirit of the galant will be kept with the Talon being as much of a sleeper as possible. -------------------- GVR4 866/1000 = the perpetually broken car

I'm not sure if I missed the initial post but I'm not sure if your Talon is a 1G or 2G.
If it's 1G then things are relatively cheap. We have a BUNCH of heater cores here. You can have one of them free if it helps you out and you want to pick it up. Trannies: 2G trannies should all be 23 splines. The 22 spline is for the '90 tranny and T-case. After that they went to a 23 spline I believe. You can always swap output shafts if you need to make it fit with your T-case so that isn't the biggest of deals. We have a few 1G AWD trannies here still if you decide to go that route. Typically a used tranny in good shape goes for $300. 1G heater core- Free 1G radiator- $40 If you have a list or want to stop by sometime to go over what you need you are welcome to. Also offering a 1G U-wrench-it indoor junkyard as well. Hopefully I'm not polluting your thread with 1G info if you are transplanting into a 2G roller here. -------------------- |

HELP!!!! I'm pulling the heater core and am about to start throwing things. I've got the whole dash off and every bolt lose from the climate control along with all the little clips. The stupid thing won't move an inch. I can move parts of it and inch but as a whole it won't budge. Am I missing something?

Have you removed the ends of the hoses from inside the engine bay? Even a bit of rubber will make it hang up on the way out. They are the clips as well as a number of small (10mm I think) nuts that have to come out from the inside as well.

Also tends to help to remove the AC condenser and blower motor. Try starting from the passenger side first and take out the plastic housings (or at least free them up.) one at a time.

I wasn't even thinking about that hooking strait to it. I'll get out there and do it. I'm hoping I can do it without taking the A/C lines lose. Its R12 and I don't want to mess it up in case there still is a charge.
BTW, The transmission is a 23 spliner. Does anyone have an extra 2g 23 spline transmission? -------------------- GVR4 866/1000 = the perpetually broken car

Well the good news is the A/C system holds a good charge. The bad is that I just let a whole bunch of R-12 out. Well sounds like its time for a 134a conversion on this beeotch.
