Ok I’ve been trying to find a beater while I fix my 94 but I need a weekend car. My question is what should I look out for, or know about these cars before I make a crazy decision. Right now I’ve been talking to a guy selling a 95 VR4 with a little over 50k. Its black 6 speed, leather, nice interior and exterior. Is 16.5k a fair price? Spy, I know you’ve got some experience with these cars what’s your insight?

Seems kinda high... it is a 10 year old car after all! I think you can slightly earlier year models for less than 8k if you look hard.

I'd avoid those cars like the plauge. They have one of the highest yearly maintenance costs out there. And thats if you don't mod it. And 16.5 is a total rip off. I'd say more like half that.

RX7 isn't a bad choice if rebuilding the engine every 60K doesn't bother you. If you're looking to buy a Japanese supercar expect to either spend a lot of money up front or spend a lot of money to fix it up.

Here are a few of the cars i have been looking at. There is also a 98SS for 13.5k 6 speed leather t-tops that has me interested. The s2000 or RX7 would be really nice but i would prefer a 2+2. Never driven a WRX. i really like the late model eclipse's but i actually prefer the 1gb's looks over the 2gb (maybe I'm nuts?) and the srt4 is a nice car that i have taken out a few times but just not really sure i want a neon. Anything else i should be looking at or know?

SRT-4 is the way I would go for an under $20k budget or a newer Trans-Am WS6 and spend an extra $1000 on a turbo kit

toyota has a really clean black/tan one. Check it out, just be aware that it needs a clutch.

i think 16 something with like 50K on it. But they tend to discount there used cars well. I could see it going for 14ish, maybe less.
Might be a 97 though, i can't remember. |

I'm almost posative that no 3rd gen us rx7 had rear seats, very few 2nd gens so you would have to plan on converting them, but why bother, they're useless anyway and since it wouldn't be stock you don't get an insurance break.
VR-4s have too much of a maitenence cost imho to be used as a dd. Same with an rx7. 97-99 gsx/gst are too pricey for being overweight and finicky, do love the way they look though. Insurance will be high on any of those. I think any of those if driven will loose a lot of their value. The SS will be probably the best bang for your buck. I'm not fond of the last gen camaros, fire chickens look good though. Whatever you're interested in, might want to register on a brand/model specific board and look around at common threads/problems/issues/mods/etc. Might give you a better idea on what you'd be dealing with. |
