 Help Loud Knock @2500 RPM and up |

Ok I had a boost leak at the injectors. So I replaced the seals at the bottom of the injectors. Also at leak at the top of the TB (the adjustment screw) I used some thread seal (tape) and screwed it back in. Ok start the car back up. sounds great. Idles great. I drive it to get some gas. Finally holds at 14psi. So I adjust the AVCR and it spiked to 20. Then I slow down and hear this knocking noise. It could of been there before but my exhaust is so loud you can`t hear anything. But I know it was not there yesterday because I adjusted the BOV and reved the engine to hear the psssh. I get it in the garage and rev it up and it is a loud knock that sounds like it is coming from the back of the block. THis is a 2g with T-25. If you need to know.
Also the coolant was boiling. I was not looking at the temp gauge while driving maybe I over heated the engine. I really need some advise. HELP!!!!! |

Is the knock RPM-dependant...does it increase when you increase the RPMs? If so, pull the oilpan off and check for metal flakes.

It's possible that it's not opening soon enough and you're getting some compressor stall (which is extremely hard on the turbocharger) but that wouldn't explain the noise coming from the back. He told me it drove fine to the gas station and after he got gas it started doing this..

I assume you're suggesting detonation (or the aftermath of it), which is very possible. Where'd you get gas and what grade? If it was anwhere like Caseys and anything less than 92 octane you could be in trouble.

overheated, hmmmmmm
bad headgasket? check for oil in coolant and vice versa, check the oil level, if its low it could just be lifter tick --------------------

Oil wasn't low and he said that the coolant was just gurgling when he shut it off.

Ok. Well I pulled off the 4th injector wire and the knocking stopped. So I am assuming that it is a rod bearing. But next week we are going to pull the oil pan and check it. Problem is I none of the parts stores I called carry them. I will try Napa or the dealership. I guess I could order some but I am impatient.
Thoughts? |

That logic doesn't make sense...a bad rod bearing will knock whether or not fuel is present in the combustion chamber, wouldn't it? -------------------- '90 Talon TSi AWD

It's very possible for the rod bearing knock to cease after removing the injector. The bearings aren't DIRECTLY affected by the injector, but when the cylinder fires, that's when the assembly is subjected to a serious jolt, and that's when you'll here the noise from a sloppy bearing. Just like hitting a pothole with bad shocks.

I didn't realize that you could diagnose a bad bearing by stopping combustion in the suspected chamber. That is what we think it is . I drained the oil and no metal. So it is just what I am leaning towards. Well I am hoping a rod bearing is all it is. I am not a master tech nor am I a mechanic. I am just sharing information that was given to me.

We tore into the car last night, changed out the rod bearings and she per's like a kitten.
We have a slight tick but it only shows up when you push in the clutch, so I think that's another issue... but otherwise we'll see what happends from here. |
