Need a 2G GST transmission!

Alright, my car broke down in the middle of Veteran's tonight.
Anyone know of a place to buy a good-used transmission for the 2G GST?
Also, how much will it cost to install??

Thanks in advance...

tranny should be around 3-500 depending on how you look. I would also suggest changing your clutch if it hasnt been done in awhile. but just the tranny drop thats easy I'd do it myself and save a few.

2G trannies can be a bit pricey and hard to find. Have you thought about having your current one rebuilt at Slopony?

Define 'broke down'. Won't go into any gear? Big gaping hole in the tranny? Locked up? Or started dropping specific gears? Some problems lend themselves to cheaper rebuilds than others.

Well it goes into gear no problem. But, after letting out the clutch and going a little, you'll start hearing a bad grinding noise. Before this 2nd gear was popping out 1 of 10 times. I have no ideas or experience with transmissions besides changing the tranny oil out once in a while.

Currently the car is at mid-state transmission...
let me know what you all think I should do.

Well, first of all get it away from those jackos. I've seen/heard of their prices and they are definitely one of the higher priced places in the area for the same amount of work. If you want a used transmission, the best resource would probably be www.dsmtrader.com Slopony is well known for their good transmission rebuilds, I'd try them. It doesn't sound like it's anything they couldn't handle rebuild wise. They quoted me $415 to remove, rebuild, and reinstall my 1G trans (providing they didn't have to replace hard parts). The closest person that could do the same kind of work was over $1000. Think about it.

Justin, the most obvious differences between the 2G and 1G trans are the bell-housings and motor mounts. On the 2G the bellhousing is in a different shape/pattern so that it bolts up to the 7 bolt block. That's why when doing a 1G in a 2G swap you have to switch bellhousings. The front motor mount on the 2G are on the transmission. On the 1G, they are on the motor. You can put a 2G transmission in a 1G (w/ swapped bellhousings) but you can't vice versa.

True on the motor mounts... not so on the bell housing. 6-bolt and 7-bolt 1g and 2g all have the same bolt pattern for the bell housing to block bolts.

Ahhh, ok. After rereading I realized I was thinking of the 4g64. Sorry for the mistake.

4g64 and 4g63 have the same exact block becides the deck. The transmissions bolt up just the same between them.

I'm not sure what your mod list looks like man, but if you are running basicly stock you could also look for a 94-98 galant transmission. The F5M31 will bolt right up(same housing). If given the choice I'd have bought another one of those the first time my tranny went and never let them rebuild it.

A galant transmission will take 300whp all day long, beond that is where you'll have problems with it.

I don't have any mods, this car is completely stock. I found some transmissions from Galants here in Illinois from around $150-600.

Is this a common solution for some people?

Its a solution that nobody knows about. My galant transmission took 350+whp for a year with no problem. At stock power levels you will get a long life out of it for a cheap price.

update::
Bought a used 51K transmission with 6 months warranty from Colorado... 750 shipped and midwest transmission is going to install it for $350... that included taking out my old transmission and reinstalling this one. Slopony was going to charge me about the same for the uninstall and reinstall of the trans.
