Anyone know they guy who bought my 90 GST from me in June?

I need a contact number for him and his name...

Here's the issue:

I sold the car in June and left the plates on the car. I sold it I didn't need them anymore... So anyhow I get a letter in the mail from Chicago Parking Enforcment with a $50 parking ticket....

I don't even own this car anymore, but he is still driving the car on my old plates and hasn't registred the car yet. I have contanted the DMV and Chicago Parking people.

And now to top it off I've got another parking ticket sent to me from Northwestern University for $10.

I have tried to contact people that know him but I have yet to hear anything back.

This is just not right... I don't own this car and now I'm getting shafted. Any info would be great so I can get this resolved.

Not to sound like a dick but that's why you take the plates off of it when you sell it. It is perfectly legal to drive straight home without any plates and just a signed title.

True, but that doesn't give this douchebag the right to not register his car. I think a public lynching is in order. It's pretty damn hard to track the guy if he isn't linked to the car by the state, too. That sucks.

Take it to the authorities if you haven't already. Him driving around with your old plates is illegal. Like Goat said he may be hard to track, but at least they can keep an eye out for your old plates.

I just left them on (PRJGST1) "Project GST 1" becasue I didn't have another Eclipse. It never occured that they would do this. I have talked to the DMV and filled out a couple forms but who knows if that will work.

this same thing happened to me. I sold a car and then got a parking ticket like 1 year later. I called the department that I got the ticket from and told them of my situation. They cleared everything right away. Then like 2 months ago, I got another ticket from a different department. Somehow, the plates ended up on an old caddy and I got the ticket, they ran the plates and again cleared everything up.

My state Farm Agent told me that I was covered the day I drive the new car home, as long a I called and got an estimate first on the car I was considering. I then had 24 hours to confirm the purchase and get the insurance officially started.

That is a very false statement! It is not legal to drive a uninsured and unregerstired car on the street! There is no grace period for this! PERIOD

The proper way to buy a used car is to have already taken care of title and plate transfer along with getting insurance before you take the car home!

I am not saying cop's can't make their own discretion on this but like i said that is a huge myth that is not true!

My insurance covers any new car purchase for 30 days...............................without me telling them about it

As I understood it the insurance from your last car covers that 30day grace period and your signature on the title and the date on the title confirm that you in fact did buy it that day and are driving home from the registered location to your place of residence. If you were 50miles in the other direction from where the place of purchase was in relation to the destination, then they'd probably be suspicous.

I guess I really don't know for sure, it's just what I was always told.

You didn't read what i said at all! I said it is not legal to drive a car uninsured in the state of IL. If you do not have record of insurance in a car what happeneds?

Thats right you have to go to court and prove insurance! Like i said you have to have "PROOF" of insurance and a car must be registered!

that can be had by the time of the court date, my insurance company told me they would insure it without notice under my other cars policy for 30 days. Course I have no proof, but they did print me off stuff for my nissan before I bought it, had an insurance card for it when I went to get it, free of charge.

as for the plates etc.............I dunno man, I wouldnt go get plates for something before I owned it, never know whats gunna happen/buyer could back out. Cops seem to be pretty understanding about driving on the title when its a new purchase. Hell, when I got busted for a 91 in a 65 I couldnt find the up to date POI card, but he said he wasnt worried since i provided the last 18 months worth of insurance cards while trying to find the up to date one.

I did read what you said, I just think you didn't grasp what I was saying, or maybe I didn't fully explain myself. I bolded the important part above, this was straight out of my agents mouth.

state farm definately gives a 30 day grace period....If anything happens in the 1st 30 days you're still covered.

It is NOT perfectly legal to have just a bill of sale, or a title, and no plates on a car. PERIOD!!! In the past year and a half, I have had to go through registering four vehicles. The first time I went in, I asked the guy about it, and he said that was illegal. Why do you think you get your car registered when you take a loan through a bank or a dealership? Because you need to be IMMEDIATELY registered if you are to hit the open road.

Insurance coverage is a given when you call your local agent and either leave a message or tell them about it.

Good luck with getting this resolved. If you still have the bill of sale, hopefully the tickets won't go against you. Take heed of this advice: if you sell a car, then it's out of your hands how they pick it up and take off on the road. Don't sacrifice your record on an idiot's behalf.
