well a few weeks ago i drove up to detroit to pick up a 92 tsi awd 5 spd with only 110k on the dash and 95k on the engine (came out of an esclipse gsx that was wrecked) the talon skipped timing so it had to be replaced. When i first got it i wasnt very educated in driving a manual so i thought i was doing something wrong because the car was just plain slow. Well last week i was sitting in front of my house with the car idleing and it started to smoke then it progressed to just clouds of smoke at idle. I thought it was the valve guides, and i just happend to have a brand new head off of a 93 laser. so i tosed that on there along with a "jdm" 14b just incase the turbo was going bad. Well turns out the idiot who put it together decided to put an A/T exhaust manifold on the 14b housing. but he forgot to take the ring that lines up the manifold and housing, of course it fell into the turbo and limited me to only 3 psi at wot. the turbine housing had a crack that ran from the wastegate to the o2 housing and was completley though the housing. well got everything together. (new turbo, head, head gasket, timing belt, knock sensor and everything else that i could think of to bounce more checks on) got it started today sounded good. took it out for a slow ride then floored it from a stop ran through 1st then as i went into 2nd all of my boost droped and as soon as i would hit 3k all i can hear is boost leak. got home checked it out and the ring/gasket on the exhaust side of the turbo housing had came off (the one with the two little holes that goes on the turbo irself). Ive never had this happen before and was wondering if it is at all common or if there is something wrong with my tubo??? i cant find any pliers with a 90 angle to get in there so now its just sitting there, and leaking boost like a motherfu***r. Im going up to slopny tomorow to have josh look over everything to make sure i didnt forget something stupid like usual (ive got about 20 bolts that seem to have no home unsure.gif ) just wondering whats up with the turbo really but since im bored it seems ive typed a book oops any one have any idea's?

the ring/gasket think you mentioned....is that the v-band clamp that secures the center cartridge to the turbine housing? If so, damn, that sucks. I've never heard of that happening before, but I'm sure it isn't good. That turbo may be toast, sorry.
