Alright I posted this over at DSMtalk with little to no response, any of you guys can help out? I'd appreciate it
From DSMtalk: "Alright so I was getting a pretty loud ticking under acceleration and also some deceleration so I did quite a bit of reserach on here and figured maybe some of my lifters might have collapsed (1990 Eclipse GS-T) so I decided to pull them all out and clean them along with the rocker arms today. I got everything all back together and performed the cleanings per VFAQ. I pulled the MPI fuse and cranked the car for 30 seconds, and then started it up. LOUD lifter noise, im thinking OK its going to go away after a bit, 10 minutes later engine is warm and still loud tick, went out for a long drive, still loud ticks. Car still suffers from extremely crappy performance. Takes forever to climb the rpm's, takes forever to reach full boost, and in every gear after 1st, full boost is only 7 or 8 psi. WTF???? Is the ticking still so loud its causing the knock sensor to pull the timing? I have had this car about a month already and I've already swapped heads twice, and removed the b-shafts, and now this problem is occuring. " "PS-- If a lifter has technically "collapsed" will it never recover? All of the lifters I used were able to be depressed by the paperclip and flow cleaning solution as well as oil. Is this capability null even if the lifter has collapsed?" ALso one more idea that's popped into my head is a failed rocker arm. Could a rocker arm bearing seize and cause the clicking noise? ANyone heard of this happening? I'm about to my last resort of taking it to a shop -------------------- 1990 Nissan 300ZX T

Are you positive it's the head ticking? Other things that pop into my head are oil pump, water pump, turbo....
I do have some spare head parts if you would like to try another set of lifters and rocker arms. -------------------- The fastest car I own is a minivan....

If you are still using the stock boost control solenoid (bcs) connected to the ECU, it is possible that the ticking noise is being read as knock, so the ECU is pulling your boost back. During normal operation the bcs stays closed so the stock boost pressure of 11-12 psi is hit no problem. But when the ECU registers a lot of knock over a certain period of time it will periodically open the bcs to limit boost. If the knock doesn't go away it will keep the bcs open indefinitely to decrease the boost as much as possible.
If you want you can call this number for a great price 3rd revision lifters. 1-888-855-9712 Its a warehouse in Texas that carries the OEM Mitsu 3rd rev. lifters that are run in the 98-99 DSM's. I am running these in my engine and I can't hear them at all. The oil hole is much larger on these lifters. Nate
I am pretty sure its reading it as knock and retarding the timing because i can definately feel a performance drop on the car since I first had it running right. Tomorrow I'm going to look for a second set of hands and pull the valve cover and start the car w/out the cover. That way i can pinpoint if it really is the lifters/rocker arms. ANother thing im going to try is pulling all my accessory belts and starting the car, that might give some insight as to whats going on As far as the lifters they are like 7.74 a piece right? I've already looked into that and its a possibility. Thanks for the help, keep the ideas coming! If anything i might be able to take the laptop out and get a soundclip for you guys later on tonight or earlier tomorrow -------------------- 1990 Nissan 300ZX T

If you can make it out to the farm meet on Saturday, I can log your car for you. I don't know if I'd actually start the car with the valve cover off, unless you want a mess of oil all over the place. You can pull the MPI fuse and crank it with the valve cover off to get a look at the lifters in action. Just cranking the engine should keep the oil pressure low enough to keep a mess off your hands, but you should still be able to see the lifters in action. Have someone crank the engine while you are watching the lifters. Each one should have a small stream of oil exiting it every time it is compressed.

I talked to eric w. and he is going to help me log sooner or later, I have to work Saturday unfortunately and I live in farmer city so it would probably be easier for me to travel to champaign (where I work also)
Also, after i assembled the rocker arms and lifters from cleaning them I pulled the MPI fuse and had a friend crank it over so I could listen for noise and i dont think the engine is turning quick enough for it to generate enough noise for me to pinpoint the problem area. I have a jampacked day tomorrow so it looks like earlier friday mornign im going to try and pull all of the accesory belts and see if the problem lies in the water pump or something like that (yes i know to start it cold and not leave it run long) Is it possible a cam "wore" creating a rough contact surface with the rocker arm and thats what's making the chatter? -------------------- 1990 Nissan 300ZX T
