Any of you guys know ABOUT how much a tranny rebuild or replace would cost? Im looking at buying a 90 tsi fwd. The guy says that 4th gear grinds above 3k rpm and is starting to show ageing. He believes its a bad syncro...how much would it cost to fix something like that?

Ide appreciate any info and thanks in advance

Does he mean that it grinds going into gear above 3K or that when fourth is already engaged and you hit 3K+ rpm it makes a grinding noise?

As for where to go, I'd say Slopony's hands down would be the place to go for a rebuild or build-up. I think I remember seeing a post that they were only charging $150 plus parts for tranny rebuilds. (can't quote their labor but I think the post should be around if you do a search.)

SloPony will do that $150 deal for DSMCentral members. That's only if you take the tranny out yourself. For them to remove the tranny it was another $300-400. If you plan on SloPony doing all the work, I'd plan on $800+. I've got a couple cars for sale with good trannies if you don't want to hassle with it.

It grinds when you shift from 3rd at above 3000 rpm into 4th gear...
