i would like to know if anyone is running a 20g. i am thinking of doing the evo16g but i am going to build a motor and i don't wanna spend money on a bigger turbo later on in the project. what i am looking for is about 400hp when i'm all done. I know it's not going to take much considering the numbers i've seen from some of the other guys on here but it's a good goal for me. so all i am wanting to know is if the 20g is going to be a better choice insted of the evo. i just don't wanna over work the turbo and have it crap out on me in a year. if the evo can take the abuse then that is fine be i don't wanna have to struggle to squeeze the last bit of power out of it to reach my goal.

thanks tyler

If you can afford to go 20g then go 20g. The extra lag is minimal and you'll get used to it very quickly. Plus I'm not sure 400hp is even possible on a evo 16g without a stand alone and loads of dino time.

Just remember the 20g requires full fuel system upgrades, a MAS upgrade, a full 3" exhaust (or at least a 2.5" dp with a 3" cat-back), larger ic piping, a fully ported 2G exman, and a larger or extremely hogged out O2 housing. A fmic would be a good idea as well so the stock sidemount doesn't choke the turbo.

A 16g requires none of this, but its all good ideas for engine safety and performance anyway.

A 20g flows quite a bit more air than a 16g.

Here's a good comparison of older Mitsu turbos. (The evoIII 16g isn't on here):

FROM WHAT THIS POST SHOWS NATE THE EVOIII ONLY FLOWS 100CFMS LESS THAN THE 20G. NOW WHAT I AM WONDERING IS IF THAT 100 MORE CFM'S IS WORTH THE EXTRA $400 ?? EVOIII - $535 AT 550CFM 20G- $1100 AT 650CFM
I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE UPGRADE FUEL THING AND THE EXHAUST IS NOT A PROBLEM. CAN YOU USE A EVOIII EXHAUST MANIFOLD ON THE 20G??
AND I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULD GET A 20G W/ INTERNAL WASTEGATE? I THOUGHT YOU HAD TO GO EXTERNAL. THE PROBLEM I'M RUNNING INTO IS I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE I'LL HAVE TO DO TO RUN THE 20G.

IS IT GONNA HAVE TO BE STANDALONE FUEL??
HOW IS THE TURBO LAG ON THE 20G?
EXTERNAL WASTEGATE ONLY?
HOW BIG ON INJECTORS?? 550-650??

I'm running a Frank level 3 in my car. Its basicly a 20g with a 54 trim t4e wheel in stead of the 20g wheel. It's suposed to flow 690cfm. It is internally gated, but with my exhaust it has never had a problem staying to 8psi for me.

Its really up to you on how far you go. Either way on the fuel side if you want 400 horse you will need 650s, a walbro 255hp, and an AFPR(assuming you already have an SAFC) Hopefully I'll finnish my ECU swap this weekend and will let you guys know how mine likes 15psi.

By the way, on the CFM thing. That is rated at 15psi. If you look at the map for a 20g you'll see that it really likes to stay above 20psi.

do us all a favor and take the time to reach over with your little pinky and tap that caps lock key, chief.

Well, IF you decide on the 20G, you can get if for cheaper than $1100. DSMParts has 'em for under $1000 and Kevin (snapon4) down here in Springpatch, upgraded his 14b to a 20G for around $350. Granted, it's a hybrid, and probably not as efficient as if he had a 7cm turbine housing...but it's FAST. Of course, he opted for 780cc injectors (yes, overkill) and the MAF/MAFT setup, so he doesn't have PRECISE control over fuel, but we logged it and it runs pretty damn well.

Do some more research on the different turbos and supporting mods you'll need. Don't forget about intercooling, too.

go for T3/T4. $850 on straight line specialties. Some other good stuff on there as well. Site says that this turbo will support 440 hp biggrin.gif Hell I'm considering buying one eventually. But, you will have to buy about the same supporting mods as a 20G.

I think we can all agree that if 400 horse is the goal that the supporting mods listed by natedogg are going to be necessary.
