After 13 DSM's

, I figure it's time for a change... never owned a v8 rear drive car before. Kinda always wanted one since I was a high schooler.
Got lucky and scored a deal with a local Dealer for a 1996 Mustang Cobra. Apparently this is Chuck's old car from Winner's Circle (if that means anything to anyone).
I'll get some pics tonight after I pick it up.
Hoping you guys will still let me hang out with "ya'll".

hmmmmmmm.....I'll try and keep the "Sh*tstang" jokes to a minimum lol. Does this said Mustang Cobra have any performance modifications?

From what I've been told, it's got a fairly new motor, SPEC clutch, H-pipe, and an exhaust. Also appeared to have a Cold air kit on it. I'm guessing it puts out a few more ponies than the stock 305hp...

A guy at work has a 98 cobra. With intake, headers, full 3" exhaust, and a chip, he almost caught 300 horse.

I know what car you are talking about and from what I know it is quite a piece.

I'm not a mustang kinda gal, however, Rob was so kind as to let me drive it last night.....with his white knuckled wife in the car with me......and I must admit that it was quite an enjoyable experience

the rear-wheel drive sure is fun lol. Thank goodness the 2 cops behind me (that I had no idea were there until we got to rob's and he told me) didn't mind a little squealing, chirpping, and smoking lol Thumbs up to Rob and Kristy on this purchase, hope you have tons of fun with it

In all honesty, never been a huge fan of the Stang, but I will readily admit that there is something intoxicating about the sounds those cars make. If I could afford it, I'd buy it just to rev the engine and listen. Congrats, and have fun in the world of : WOW!! There are 15,000 companies that make EVERY part for my car! Good luck, stay sideways.

Spy - May 30th... high noon.
Thanks for the words of encouragement guys. Honestly, I've hated fords most of my life. Last one I owned was 10 years ago, and an 85 escort, my first car... one word - POS.
So why get one now... well, I never really had a basis to hate Ford other than that escort. After owning so many DSM's that were just a big of heap, I figure maybe I should give Ford another shot. We'll see...

I'm all for V8 power and rear wheel drive tire spinning fun. I don't even have brand preference like most. I Just hope that you don't let it get to your head like it does owners that have never driven anything else. 300 ponies is nothing to sneeze at and the Cobra is fast, but it's not ANY WHERE near as fast as it sounds when it's ripping the tires off!!! Reminds me of the FWD tire spinning intoxication... In reallity that Cobra should run about 14.0 second ET's which happens to be very similar to a fast FWD GST that I know of.
BTW - A newer Stang with a new motor can't really be compared to Old, used-up DSM's or Escorts for that matter, when it comes to reliability.
Not hating, just hoping you have fun and keep a good perspective.

Excellent observations Marcus... I totally agree that all the squeeling and smoke show can add a "feel fast" factor. Looking forward to running it on may 30th to put some nubers to it.

Congrats Rob on th buy!

Welcome to the crazy world of the RWD. I know my 240 isn't the coolest looking or sounding. Hell, it ain't fast either (not a word, Spy), but goin' sideways is soooo cool.

Good job on the cobra rob. We should go cruise some time my cobra your cobra should be fun. My car did a 13.2 with mickey at 104. That was with a catback, offroad h, imrc delete, and a nasty 3.08 gear in the rear. Now with the 4.10 I am interested in seeing what she will do. I still don't have the talon together yet though. Rob you shold go to the mobile 1 challenge in st louis. We are going there in a caravan on the 14th of may.

I think that car also has a 4.10 gear in it because I don't think chuck wanted to take it out before he got rid of the car.

Cool, that would explain the shitty gas milage...

I've been finding little things that have been done to it every day. Seems to have a suspension on it of some sort, and it's got the fiberglass "R" hood on it. Having a blast with it as-is... but I'm sure I'll get the itch to start throwing some parts at it soon enough.

Check to see if the shifter is aftermarket because that should be the first thing you do. Mine is still getting 18-19 in the city with the 4.10. If I think of anything else that car has on it or had on it I will tell you because I talked to him a few times about it. Does it still have the 94-95 cobra wheels on it. Spy you should get a mustang because they are always fun to play with. That is why I sold my first dsm and bought the mustang. Now I have another dsm and kept the mustang. Get that car dynoed rob mine did 310 hp at the wheels and 278 tq. Steve

Yea, I've read a little about the shifters and weak shift forks. How would I check to see if it's aftermarket (other than pull it all apart)? I'm thinking the next time that R&T does a dyno day to take it up there just for kicks.
Wheels are stock 96 as far as I can tell.

Apr 13 2004, 10:01 PM
The 96 wheels have grey or black inserts between the spokes where the 94-95 are completely chrome. You can tell if the shifter is aftermarket by taking off the knob pull out the bezel around the shifter and take the leather boot off with it. Check the side of the handle and see if it is bronze colored or a shiney billet aluminum. The nice thing about the shifter is the stops that will stop you from overextending the shifter past the gear. Most aftermarket shifters have a spring in them for the 2-3 shift so all you have to do is push strait up and you will hit 3rd. I recommend the steeda triax or the pro 5.0 stay away from the mac shifter.

I'll check those wheels after work. Thanks for the info on the shifter also.

No local stang forums around that I have been able to find, however www.fastrides.net has a few guys that know their stangs. Another good big place to check out is www.svtperformance.com and www.modulardepot.com
Modding the 4.6 is expensive me and baby jesus cry.

The mod motor is very expensive but I wouldn't trade it for a 5.0 any day of the week. Got to love 7k rpm on a 32v v8.
